Songs You Didn't Know Had Lyrics

Way back in foreverago (Late 1997 or early 1998 when I was living on campus), Craig Kilbourn was messing around and sang lyrics to the The Daily Show theme song. Lyrics that he of course made up. It was like “Here comes another of The Day-ly Sho-ow/You’re gonna like it, it’s The Day-ly Sho-ow.”

I always always hear this when I hear the TDS theme. Haven’t ever been able to find Craig’s clip online, though.

They were even sung in the movie version with Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman.

I had always thought “One Mint Julep” was a Ray Charles original.
The Ray Charles instrumental experienced renewed popularity in the 90s when it was used for a series of television commercials for Capio iced coffee.
It was only a few years ago that I found out it was originally a hit for The Clovers . . . and it had lyrics.

The Blue Danube Waltz / By Strauss / the louse
He lives in a house / with Mick / E mouse…

Which anyone who saw the movie would know. Since the movie and series had very different audiences, there’s not 100% overlap.

Merry-Go-'Round Broke Down. It’s the Loony Tunes theme song. The one that Porky Pig goes “Tha. . tha. . tha. . that’s all folks!” over. It’s about finding love on a broken carousel. I’ve got the Russ Morgan version of it on my iPod.

The theme song to “I Love Lucy”.

I think it’s in the movie, After the Thin Man–I was surprised to hear someone actually singing the lyrics to “Sing, Sing, Sing.” It’s a song used often in 1930s and '40s period pieces, one of the most evocative of the Swing era, but I’d never heard words to go with the music before.

OK, so it sort of has words, but they are all nonsense, here are the lyrics Prisencolinensinainciusol (with lyrics) - YouTube

PS. The Blonde girl who appears alongside Celentano is called Raffaella Carrà - she is a very long established star on the European circuit, often known by her nick - The Raff

I watched MASH plenty as a kid, but hadn’t seen the movie until I was probably in my late 20s. I remember being floored that the theme had lyrics. Then, shortly after discovering this, I heard a cover by The Manic Street Preachers. Strange coincidence.

Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man, although the lyrics were added later.
*
Hey - Watermelon Man
Hey - Watermelon Man
Bring me one that rattles when you lug it
One that’s sweet and juicy when you plug it
Do you understand - Watermelon Man*

The theme song to The Andy Griffith Show has lyrics but I can’t get to youtube right now.

Won’t you stop and take
A little time out with me
Just take five!

Also, NPR’s “Morning Edition” theme song:

I remember seeing Patrick Duffy on The Tonight Show, shortly after the *Dallas *episode in which Bobby Ewing stepped out of the shower and his wife Pam realized that he was still alive and the entire previous season had been a bad dream.

One of the other guests asked him if he had a good singing voice, and asked him to sing something. He said, “What can I sing? The only thing I know is the *Dallas *theme, and it doesn’t have words. I could make some up. ‘I’m back… I’m wet… It was all just a dream…’

STAR WARS!

nothing but STAR WARS!

fighting those STAR WARS!

Channeling Bill Murray from an old SNL skit?

Isn’t everyone?

Sketches. In the business, they’re called sketches. Skits are what you do in high school German class to show you’ve learned the material for that week.

Well, I have only one thing to say about that.
Excuuuuuusssee meeeeeeeeee!!!
