Sony cancels "The Interview"; Wise or Foolish?

And they don’t ever need to release it in theatres. Streaming will work just fine. Sign deals with Amazon to have a “first release” streaming into the comfort and safety of your own home. People who would have never bothered with this sort of stupid film will see it just to see what the fuss is about. Then market the heck out of it.

It’s been reported that they will not be able to receive insurance payout if they release the movie anywhere.

No, that’s her sister. Kim Yo-jong is rather cute.

Egad, that is quite a haircut. And agreed, Kim Yo-Jong is cute. I didn’t think the Kim family genes could produce any hotness.

But I was really thinking of the brother Kim Jong-nam as the Dom Delouise lookalike:

Then they simply have to decide if they will get more money releasing it or taking the payout.

Our course, insurance premiums for movies will go up - suddenly there is a new reason you might not release a movie - because someone doesn’t like it enough to threaten to blow up theatres. That might not be the best long term solution either. Or policies will get written to exclude this case. Its just too easy for any terrorist group - from militant anti abortionists to ISIS to threaten to blow up theatres.

Yeah, count me among those who think that this was the worst possible reaction. I recognize Sony’s exposure here could be enormous, but the rest of this script is a Hollywood cliche: The Hackers now own Sony and will continue to bitch-slap them around, until eventually the information leaks anyway.

I wonder if Sony could have turned this to their PR advantage. Not specifically in promoting this film, but by declaring themselves a bulwark of free expression and artistic creativity, seeking the public’s support. Might have been able to turn lemons into lemonade that way.

As I said, this reads like a Hollywood script. And mark my prediction: Eventually all the lifted information will come out anyway. Do we really think that people who engage in extortion are good for their word? Men of honor?

Rob Lowe seems to have nailed it: “Hollywood has done Neville Chamberlain proud today”

Hold on. The hottie on the left is Ri Sol-ju, no? Whereas the meh-looking chick on the right is Kim Yo-jong?

So, over the weekend it looks like someone nuked the NK internet connection (presumably through China). No one is saying who did it…could have been the US, could have been someone else, or it even could have been the NKs themselves, since they do crazy shit like that sometimes. If it was us, though (or if the NKs think it was) we could see a really nasty escalation unless China steps in (and steps on the Glorious Leader and the NKs, which doesn’t look likely right now).

Sony ‘changed their mind’, it’s back on. Greatest marketing gimmick ever.

Does Sony have any legal standing in threatening people such as reporters and now Twitter for posting the stolen emails? On one hand, if you knowingly accept and use stolen property, that’s against the law. On the other hand, these are just emails

You really think there’s enough outrage/nationalism whipped up to make increased numbers at smaller theater chains surpass what it would have drawn at AMC and the like?

The movie is playing at one of our area’s “arty” theaters on Xmas day.

I’m not sure it’s worth going to see a probably lousy movie just to give Fat Boy the finger.

Yeah, there’s no way Sony comes out of this making even a fraction of what they’d have gotten out of a wide release.

My guess is that people are going to see it in the limited release out of rah-rah and will end up generally disappointed, leading to a whole pile of mediocre reviews and a collective “meh” from the public.

(Mind you, I’m a sucker for Rogen and Franco, so I’ll see it eventually. But at an arthouse on Christmas? Not on your sweet bippy. Not even to give Fat Boy the finger. :D)
.

At least for me, anyway, these experts make a more compelling case that it wasn’t NK that hacked Sony, but an insider, and they think they know who.

Why do you think it’s more compelling? Simply because they have a different suspect? Even if ‘Lena’ is the insider, it’s not mutually exclusive that if ‘she’ did it that she wasn’t working with or for the NKs. Even your ‘more compelling’ folks didn’t actually identify who or what the “Guardians of Peace” are.

I’d actually need to see what the forensic evidence IS to know whether it was ‘more compelling’, and since neither the FBI nor Norse et al has released it, I’d go with the FBI’s (and presumably the NSA) take until I see more, since I know the quality of their cyber-security creds and don’t know much about the vendors in your article. Basically, they could be trying to simply get exposure for their company and their offerings by creating a controversy, while I don’t see a compelling motive for the FBI to lie about it, and I seriously doubt they would stick out their necks if they weren’t sure. The claim that the NKs don’t have the cyber-security ability for this hack is pretty fishy from what I understand of their capabilities, so that makes me serious question their assertions.

It would be ironic, though, if NK didn’t do it, since generally they claim innocence when they are caught red handed. :stuck_out_tongue:

I just watched it online for 6 bucks, and there’s no way I would have gone to the theater to see it (not this movie in particular, but I haven’t been to a theater in years). I’m really anxious to learn what it grosses through online sales, and their marginal costs should be way down from the costs of physical distribution to individual theaters.

Or am I obsolete in thinking that? Do most movies nowdays get distributed as actual film in cans, or by some digital means?

The cans are disappearing, and some report that 2014 could be the last year one would see them:

But, as a young lady on the radio said, it’s your patriotic duty. :smack:

I thought it was worth 6 bucks online (possibly confirmation bias). It was reasonably funny most of the time.
