Sophomoric fun with high school team name

Awww… I just want to pet them, that sounds so cute - not exactly what one looks for in a high school sports mascot, I would think.

I remember seeing the school ID of a woman who attended a high school in Arizona whose mascot was the Prisoners. On the part of the ID where the picture of the mascot goes was a little cartoon head of a bald tough guy, like someone Popeye would be seen beating up or something.

Man, I thought one school in the state with Pretzels was bad enough. I didn’t know about New Berlin.

Of course, there are always the Joliet High School Steelmen, not bad considering the history of the town. But then there are the Lady Steelmen.

Unfortunately for the funny part of it, Pekin High School has changed mascots. They’re Dragons now.

My high school’s teams were called the Colts (and Lady Colts). A j.v. cheerleader typo at a game once rendered the name as “Clots,” which was much more appropriate.

Or the Viqueens.

There is a local Trojans team that many people refer to as the Rubbers. My high school was the Bulldogs and yes, we had Lady Bulldogs. It never seemed funny to me at the time.

In the town where my husband grew up, the high school team was called the Demons, and the nearby middle school had the Imps. Also, in our town we have a road called Hog Liver Road. We jokingly call the school located on that road “Hog Liver Middle School: Home of the Fighting Viscera”.

I like that better than “Lady Dawgs”, as with a certain high school I know of also with the Bulldogs mascot. Yes. Lady Dawgs.

Around here, we have the Bulldogs (and Lady Bulldogs, of course) and the Crusaders and Lady Crusaders. My HS, we were the Rangers and girls’ teams were the Lady Rangers, but I guess that’s not too bad. We were the only school in our district without an animal mascot, though.

Another Illin . . . (a?) here. Beat me to it with the Fisher Bunnies. Not sure who would win in a Cardinal v. Bunny deathmatch.

One of my college roommates was from Waupaca, WI, which is apparently the potato-growing capital of Wisconsin. His high school teams were known as the Comets (and Lady Comets), but he told me that “Spudsters” had been seriously considered as the team name.

I actually went to 2 different high schools with trojans for mascots. One year they passed out condoms at graduation.

Ha! I was going to mention them. I was a Little Muskie (lame), so if your memory is good, that will tell you exactly where I went to high school.

The Little Muskies are fish, which isn’t exactly threatening. Our colors were Maroon and white. One of the teachers loved to tell a story from the 1980s where the home-ec teacher made a big production out of crafting a new mascot outfit. She kept it a big secret and ultimately unveiled “the Maroon Goon” at a pep rally. It was a faux-fur and hula-hoop monstrosity that very closely and quite unfortunately resembled a furry condom with a student running around inside it.

The whole school took one look and had no idea what to make of it. The teachers all giggled nervously. They used it for a while and retired it as soon as possible.

Here’s a fun thread about mascot names from the deep past:

OK, it’s the only thread I ever started that had any serious response

There’s the Lady Bulldogs, The Clippers (and the Lady Clippers, I was unaware airplanes had gender) and the Quakers.
