My husband has just finished the final season of the Sopranos on DVD. His take on the last episode is that Tony was shot by the guy coming out of the toilets. The screen is simply black. End. Finito. (Brad’s been wearing black all week as a mark of mourning - he’s sad that there isn’t any more. And I’m sad because he used to do our ironing whilst he watched.) He’s also offering a contract on the staff of HBO unless they make more. So is it the end of Tony **and **the series?
I believe it the end of the series for good. I was only sorry that if the guy shot Tony we didn’t see it.
He can always take up watching The Shield on DVD.
Certainly the end of the series. The ending is ambiguous, I didn’t see it as Tony getting killed, but I know others do.
Now, you should start the crack addiction that is The Wire.
The consensus on the net seems to be that Tony was indeed whacked by the guy coming out of the toilet. The hit may have been organized by one of Phil’s friends or relatives - it’s unusual for a mafioso to be killed when he’s with his family, but that may have been payback because Phil was killed in front of his family.
This is the best analysis I’ve seen on the net.
It seemed obvious to me that the message of that ambiguous ending was that Tony would never know when or how a hit would come.
Yep, that was his take on it too. We don’t get The Wire, we’ll probably get it in Oz in another 6 months or so. And he’s got all the Shield DVDS (I personally hated it as Mackie is just vile). He’s done Carnivale and Deadwood and now we’re onto season 2 of Dexter.
I think Tony’s dead, shot in the head from behind, but I agree that it’s a purposefully ambiguous scene. And if he’s not dead because of the guy in the Member’s Only jacket, he could be at the hand of anyone else, at any time. That’s the life he’s chosen: big rewards but mortal danger.
There was some speculation a few months back that Chase could be persuaded to make a Sopranos big-screen movie (even a prequel), and he said “no” pretty fast. I think he’s done all he cares to do with that particular Mafia family.
