Sopranos organization chart

It’s organized crime, right? So who’s who?

I try to watch the show carefully, but it’s all gotten muddled for me. In the beginning, Tony was one of 4 capos reporting to acting boss Jackie Aprille. Somehow, Uncle Junior figured in … maybe he was a captain, too, and just didn’t attend the lobsterfest meeting at the Bing in that one episode. Jackie was acting boss because the real boss was serving time.

Then Jackie dies. Junior becomes boss (no longer any mention of “acting,” I notice), and Tony seems to still be a captain, though everybody understands he holds the reins. Somewhere in here, Richie Aprille comes back from Florida and all of the sudden he seems to be a capo, too.

Then Uncle Junior gets house arrest and Tony becomes “street boss” with all the rights and responsiblities thereto, I suppose.

So let’s freeze-frame it here (because it only gets more complicated if we see that Junior has now been released from house arrest). Who’s the boss? Consigliere? (Silvio seems to act like Tony’s consigliere, but for the longest time I thought Hesh was Tony’s consigliere.) Underboss? (I would have said in a heartbeat that Big Pussy was underboss, but now he’s in … um … The Program.) Who are the capos now? I know Ralphie is one. Is Paulie a captain? He seems to be just an old soldier grown more psycho … could he be Underboss now?

Anybody want to help me sort this out?

BTW, it didn’t help me a bit when I re-watched the first episode and heard Tony described by 2 characters as the boss and saw that Satriale’s was called something else.

Yeah, on closer examination, the Wernick Files do declare Silvio the acting consigliere. If you found more info there than that, ?authority, please give me a more specific link.

I wonder if Tony was acting boss while Jackie was dying of cancer? When Jackie died, they (Tony and some of the other capos) all decided that they would let Junior appear to the be the captain. In truth, they were actually already running the organization. When Junior was under house arrest, Tony became acting boss and the other guys became captains. Even though Junior is no longer under house arrest, he still has legal problems so I think Tony’s continuing as the acting boss.

Ritchie was Jackie’s brother and when he got out of jail, Tony gave him some start up money ($25,000?). I don’t think he was a capo though. He was always mad because he wasn’t respected enough and felt like he should’ve had a higher place because he was Jackie’s brother.

From what I can tell, Paulie and Sylvio are captains. Big Pussy was not a capo. Tony promoted Paulie and Sylvio, but not Big Pussy because they suspected that he was an informant. He was just a made guy and soldier with close connections to the Soprano family. Christopher is a made guy and is related to Tony (nephew? cousin?). He reports to Paulie because of the bookie business that Paulie gave him. Sylvio seems to be pretty close to Tony and is always present during his meetings. Ralphie became a captain when that one dude died (on the toilet).

Also, Sylvio runs the Bada Bing. Christopher’s girlfriend, Adriana, is the niece of Jackie and Ritchie Aprille.

Well that’s what Angela and Tony have been fighting about for years. Duh.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

OK, here it goes:

In the first season, initially Jackie April was the family boss and the captains were Tony, Junior, Larry Boy Barese, Ray Curto and Jimmy Altieri, with no definite mention of who the underboss or consigliere were…and you have to remember that these two terms are pretty subjective, and can mean different things to different people.

Junior takes over, with Tony acting as a sort of underboss. Micky Palmici is Junior’s consigliere. By the end of the season, Jimmy is whacked, and his crew is presumably split amomgst the other captains, and Junior is overthrown.

Second season: Junior is boss only in a ceremonial capacity and to the FBI. Tony is actual boss, and promotes Silvio to consigliere. Paulie is promoted to captain with control over most of Tony’s old crew, and is the closest thing there is to an underboss. Control of Junior’s old crew passes to Philly Parisi and eventually Bobbie Baccelieri beforing being essentially disolved to just Junior and Bobby. Eventually Richie is promoted to captain with a crew consisting mainly of his brother’s old crew. Pussy is passed over for promotion and remains a soldier. The Baresi crew still remains strong in spite of Larry’s imprisonment, although not much is heard about them.

Third season: Ralphie unofficially runs Richie/Jackie’s old crew until Gigi is made captain. Ralphie is made captain when Gigi dies, and this is presently the most rapidly growing crew in the Soprano family. Paulie’s crew is still the muscle end of the family, and contains recently made Christoper as well as Patsy Parisi. Furio’s status is somewhat unclear…in the second season he was reporting to Paulie’s crew but now seems to be functioning as Tony’s personal bodyguard, driver and goon. Ray Curto is now working for the Feds but we will have to wait until season four to see what happens to him and his family.

Johnny Sacs is an underboss from one of the New York families who may have intentions of taking over Jersey.

Hesh is a personal friend and advisor to Tony, but not officially part of the family. You have to keep in mind that Silvio (and Micky P before him) are not consiglieres in the Tom Hagen sense, but seem to function as a sort of Chief Operations officer and in handling business between the families.

Did I leave anyone out? Here is another link, although it is a little out of date:

Very good work! Thanks!

If I can’t trust Silvio on this, who can I trust?

It did occur to me as I was posting that Hesh wouldn’t be “part of the family,” so to speak, as he probably isn’t even a made guy. But he is so obviously part of the organization it seemed natural to mention him, since he is referred to as “a friend of ours,” an expression usually reserved for made guys. I guess he’s what they might call “a friend from the other side,” like Furio … made, but made by guys other than us.

Would that be the vow of Oymerta?
