Sotomayor: Maybe a Racist. Definitely an Egomaniac.

That would make a great Telenovela! (Spanish Soap Opera)

I can’t believe this is still going. I retracted my OP in about the third post.

Mods, I have no problem with you putting this thread out of its misery.

This is obviously not about you anymore.

Evidently it is, going by posts 66 and 84.

It’s been said at several points that Sotomayor’s critics ought to stop dredging up a cherrypicked quote from several years ago, taking it out of context for political gain. I would contend that, likewise, people should shut the fuck up about the OP, considering I completely disavowed it in post 5 after carefully rereading the entire speech. But I guess there’s no reasoning with people once they smell blood in the water.

You want to keep talking about the friggin’ speech? OK. Now that I think about it, I think Sotomayor was strongly suggesting herself as an example of a “wise Latina woman.” She probably cleared her throat and pointed to herself after delivering that particular line. Egomaniac.

Also, what troubles me is not her acknowledgment that relevant personal experience may affect how a judge rules. It’s the fact that she celebrates rather than resists it. What she should have said is, “White male judges have occasionally been unable to overcome their prejudices or cultural biases, resulting in unjust rulings. I’ll try my best not to make that mistake, because I can relate to some of the victims of that unfortunate fact of human psychology.” What if a case before the Supreme Court pits a Chinese-American against a Hispanic? Is the Chinese guy going to say, “I can’t get a fair hearing because there aren’t any Chinese-American justices. Justice Sotomayor herself said that a judge with the same cultural background as the litigant will make a better decision and I don’t have that advantage.”?

My God, something you expressed a long time ago is still haunting you? I can’t imagine!

Yes, I’ll be up all night agonizing over it. And I believe I alluded to the irony of this little affair myself.

Prolly. I didn’t bother reading the whole thread - I just had one of my congressional aides summarize the talking points for me.
