"Soul Survivor"

I’m wondering about the origins of the phrase “soul survivor”. Here’s what I know so far:

It’s the name of an annual Christian youth conference held in several countries.

It’s the name of a film made in 1995 about Jamaicans living in Canada.

It’s the title (and in the lyrics) of numerous rock and rap songs and albums, the oldest of which I’ve found is a Jagger/Richards composition on the Rolling Stones’ 1972 album, ‘Exile on Main Street’.

It seems to be a pun on “sole survivor”

I expect the Stones got the phrase from somewhere in blues tradition, but my research has come up short. Google gives me too much, and it’s never the stuff I need.

Anyone?

It’s a pretty obvious pun on “sole survivor” as you noted. I’d guess that each group came up with it independently.
