I’ve recently discovered that (I think) my sound card is what is causing blue screens during games on my computer.
I think it’s the soundcard itself because updating the driver doesn’t seem to help, and disabling the card does help.
But there is some odd software behavior. Namely, no matter how many times I update the driver–and I’m fairly certain the updates go through since the device manager shows the new driver number and everything–nevertheless, when I boot the computer, it tells me no driver is installed for the device and it needs to go find a driver. I cancel this, and look, and there is a driver installed. Just, for some reason, on startup, the OS (Windows Vista) thinks there’s no driver installed.
Anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas how to fix it?
I can come back with more specific information about the sound card and driver version and so on if you need me to, once I am back at the computer with the actual problem. (It’s in the Audigy family, I know, and it’s on the cheap side.) But it seems like there’s a fair chance that specific knowledge of the particular card and driver may not be necessary to say something useful about the problem I described.
