sour mash

cornsarnit! in the process of distilling, a kettle full of slightly alcoholic liquid is heated in a kettle until the alcohol begins to boil away. this alcohol is then collected and condensed to form the wonderful aqua vitae.

but what happens to the leftover kettle gunk? is it simply thrown away, or are there uses for it?

Use some as starter for the next batch.

Throw the rest to the hogs.

might explain some posts on this board… heh

The spent mash grains from both whiskey making & beer making generally end up as cattle feed, since they’re CHEAP and relatively high in protein.

There are two things you can do with corn squeezin’s: feed it to the pigs or make whiskey out of it. That is why they invented scotch to get away from this barabarity.
