South American Horse Racing

I was in Uruguay last July & my friend & I wandered into a bar in a random town & started drinking honey grappa with a bunch of Gauchos. One of them claimed to be the owner of a horse named Good Report which would be racing in Dubai at some point. Bear in mind that my friend’s Spanish wasn’t so hot then & I can’t say anything in that language other than “please”, “thank you” & “I’m a famous fashion photographer, you have lovely eyes, can I take your picture?” But we had a great time anyway.

I was surprised when I returned home to discover that Good Report is a real horse, & that it is a good horse (it won Uruguay’s most prestigious race, the Gran Premio Ramirez, in 2006) & that the man I was drinking with does own it (on this youtube clip he can be seen being presented with a big trophy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBOaKVSBTU ).

So to my point. I told my friend (who is still abroad) that I would put on a bet for her. However, I can’t speak Spanish & my googling skills are letting me down. Does anyone know if Good Report is running in Dubai or even in its home country anytime soon? Are there any good English language websites about horse racing in South America on the internet? A colleague is a member of the Racing Post website but that doesn’t seem to have much beyond Europe, North America & Asia. I think Good Report may be registered in Argentina, by the way.

Please note that gambling is legal in my duristiction & I am not asking how to gamble or condoning gambling where it is illegal.

In my Daily Racing Form, I’ve seen many foreign horses listed, especially for major stakes, and among them have been horses from Argentina, South Africa, and other places that the DRF doesn’t typically cover. Outside of the information available when such a horse is entered in an event that the DRF does cover, I’m unsure where to find more.

But here are a few links you might find useful:

Dubai Racing Club: I don’t know if the site lists entries, but it does seem to have racing dates and meets, so you might use it as a guide to when your horse could be there.

This page at the Thoroughbred Times site lists news reports that Good Report has been featured in. By pinning down the races he has been in, you might be able to find his past performances, and through comments by his handlers, upcoming races he is likely to be entered in.

This page at About.com lists links to various topics on South American racing: some track websites, some general info, etc. I don’t know how useful they will be, but they seem to be in English, so they may be of some help.
