South Carolina District Court Judge Diane Goodstein's vacay home destroyed in explosion; injuries

Yep; I’ve literally never lived in a home or apartment that wasn’t hooked up with a gas line.

I’ve lived in Chicago for 35+ years. The first 20 years every place I lived had gas. Then I moved into a 30 story tall condo building 15ish years ago. Everything is electric. Stove, washer/dryer etc.

Gas is definitely the norm here but not in high-rises.

Lifelong Midwesterner here. I was today years old when I found out there are places where homes aren’t equipped with gas.

I looked up the house on Zillow, just for some background. It’s in a remote gated community. The heat is an electric heat pump, not gas. The house had a fireplace, but the description was inconsistent, including both “wood burning” and “gas logs” in different places on the listing.

It was built in 1999, hard to say if that’s an indicator of modern safety or it’s old enough for shabby workmanship to start making electrical problems.

We wanted gas, but were quoted a cost of about $10,000 to bring the gas line from the street to our house. Guess we’ll stick to propane.

Up in Maine, it’s super common to have a propane tank instead of a gas line, even in pretty populated places like Bar Harbor.

This is basically a declaration of war against our own people.

When I moved from Chicago to NC after I retired and started house hunting I was amazed to find that almost every house I looked at only had electric appliances. If there was any gas connection it was only for the water heater and the heating system. I wasn’t used to cooking on an electric stove, and it took some getting used to.

I quite honestly do not love cooking with a conventional electric range - temp control on the burners is tricky.

But if you’re used to gas, they’re annoying IMHO. But yeah, all-electric became increasingly common in condo complexes starting around the 1980’s. Meanwhile in CA Berkeley became the first city to ban gas hookups in new construction in 2019. In the state as a whole all homes built since 2023 must be all-electric ‘ready’ and gas appliances in new construction is due to be banned altogether by 2030.

I the road I live on has a gas meter at the end that intersects with a highway but I don’t know for certain if the gas line runs the whole length of my road. I’m pretty sure it does, but it isn’t a subject that I’ve given much thought to. If it is there, there never has been any mailings or phone calls encouraging me to tap into it.

When I earlier said that I thought the burned home probably had gas, I meant for the oven, and I assumed that because of being in an expensive house in an expensive subdivision. Edisto Island is only technically an island, it is surrounded on three sides by rivers and the ocean on only one side, so getting the gas there wouldn’t be a huge obstacle. And while there are middle and below class people living there, there are also yacht clubs and huge houses (and antebellum plantation houses) so there’s money there for it. But I don’t know for sure if there is available because I’ve never had a reason to think about it.

When I first moved here, they had an old, buried (and it turns out malfunctioning) propane tank that was used solely for the gas range. Since I prefer induction over gas, I had the gas disconnected and called the propane company to come drain the tank. My generator install took place before that ever happened, and they removed the faulty tank and put in a new one. It only runs to the generator, so no gas in the house at all.

I deleted that longer part of my post chattering on about my really quite minor range woes. But I really wish I had bitten the bullet opted for induction instead of a standard glass-top. Too late now, though (for the near future, anyway).

While what looks like the most expensive property in that neighborhood has a gas stove and gas burning fireplace, Dominion Energy service availability shows as being unavailable in that area. I even looked at the somewhat more populated area to the SW and that showed as unavailable as well.

Unless I’m missing something, it’s definitely a Hank Hill area.

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) went on Twitter and called out the Trump administration, especially Stephen Miller, for normalizing doxxing and political violence against MAGA opponents, and Miller lost his shit.

Officially all violence is left wing violence now. We all know whats coming next.

I was watching a Ryan Macbeth bit on you tube. I find him a strange mixture of insightful rationallity and bewildering niavete. He did his sponsor bit for Groundnews, giving examples of its blindspot feature. The example of the blind spot on the left was lack of reporting on the increase in left wing violence. My eyes can’t roll enough.

TIL that SLED also investigated the Murdaugh boat crash, but hopefully they’ll be more thorough and not face as many obstacles.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigating high profile (possible) crimes in South Carolina isn’t that surprising.

Yeah, I just forgot that Murdaugh was also in South Carolina.

And of course, Fox News are on point, just as they always are (i.e. never).

Um, no, arson wasn’t ruled out yet you festering pustules of malignant ooze. As usual, the actual story appears to be pretty factual, but I’m assuming they know that their typical minions don’t get past the headline.

Edit: you won’t hurt my feelings by not clicking on the link, so feel free to not give them any views.

I’m not sure about propane but natural gas explosions are incredibly rare. They put odorant into it. It will smell really bad long before there is enough concentration to explode.
