Medicore episode. Not a lot on it.
One funny part.
“Coach. Can I make one request…can you get rid of my cancer?”
It was the only time I laughed at the cancer kid (As a father of two, I have trouble laughing at sick kids)

Yes, the Red Wings fans throw the octopi - but only during home playoff games. The game in SP was played at the Pepsi Center in Denver. So it was an away game for the Wings.
That episode was mean-spirited, cynical and tasteless…I loved it!
Not being a Redwing (or hockey) fan, I was curious - what was with the father & son (I’m assuming) team owners hugging, and the two mustachioed hockey players kissing? Were those references to real-life hockey player/team owners? Or were they just throwaway gags?
The father/son combo kind of looked like Emelio Estevez and Charlie Sheen, which sort of makes sense with the episode being based heavily on The Mighty Ducks.
And I loved the whole episode, especially the first montage. The super-badass team’s player just standing there and waving at his mom had me in stitches.
I thought it was the best episode they’ve done in a long time. The bit where the kids parents want the Coach to tell him he’s dying was just genius. “I’m just his father…you’re his coach! You’re like a father to him!” Genius.
Also, I know I’m going to hell, but watching children being bludgeoned by professional athletes is one of the funniest things I can imagine.
You mean, rubber octopi or something? Or real dead ones (or live ones?!) from a fish market? Either way, how did the custom start?
I know this one! In the old days it took 8 wins in the playoffs to win the Stanley Cup. 8 wins. Octopus, 8 arms. Naturally.
There may be more to the story than that, but that’s the basics.
My DVR lost the last little bit of the episode. Someone said there was a last shot gag. What was it? I saw everything up to the Red Wings father and son hugging.
Overall, I like the episode. A nice change of pace.
IAMARWF, but my understanding is that it traces back to the time before half the NHL made the playoffs. Four teams made it, which (of course), meant a two series playoff system. As they were both best of seven, to earn the Stanley Cup, you had to win eight games.
Eight games = eight legs = octopus.
Real. Dead. (At least the ones I saw.)
As a Blackhawks fan, I hate the Wings, but I’ll admit that I kinda like the tradition.
(And, offtopic, but is it possible for ownership to screw up a team worse than the Wirtzes have? And lose that lame Tommy the Hawk bullshit mascot. I get it. You’re afraid the PC police will get mad because the team is named after an American Indian. Sorry, but it is. The uniforms are kind of a giveaway. And mascots are stupid, any way. Chicago teams, as a rule, avoid them. )
The kid with cancer watches it on TV and dies.
Oh, I did see that. I thought there might have been something after, because I never got to the closing credits. Thanks.
I think it was just a jab at the Wings. We’ve had a HUGE rivalry with the Avalanche since the mid-90s and Matt and Trey wanted to sneak that in there.
Not funny at all.
No. Funny. Funn-ay as all get out.
Try watching it again. Sometimes that helps South Park episodes.
Finally got around to watching this. Great episode, loved it, want more like it. The ‘movie preview’ gag was a reuse, but they took it to the next level with the guy holding the record player. Violence against tiny helpless pee-wee hockey players is always great, too.
Did the “Trailer Guy” thing have anything to do with Will Ferrel’s new movie where an announcer guy is always talking and he can hear it or something… I can’t quite understand the previews for that movie.
I second this. When I first watched it, I was disappointed. But, I watched again with my SO and found myself laughing at several parts.
Not the best episode, IMHO, but worth a second viewing.
I wouldn’t call this a highlight of the season.
It was decent. Lots of funny gags, but almost all of them have been done. Even the cancer boy needing his team to win was done by Trey and Matt in BASEketball. Overall I guess it was pretty funny but I’ve been a loyal SP fan since the very first episode back in '97 and I think this has been the funniest season yet. I wish they would’ve ended it with a stronger episode.
Great, great episode.
Wasn’t it also based sort of on that other hockey movie Miracle? Stan’s tweed jacket and some other elements seemed to echo that movie.
