South Park 4/28 "Crippled Summer"

Meh… not bad, but not good either, then again, it had a lot to live up to following “201”, plus, it was a Towelie episode, and I frakkin’ HATE Towelie, stupid, useless, one-note character, the Jimmy/Timmy “Cripple Camp” storyline was tedious as well

It’s almost like Matt and Trey were saying “we gave you a great episode last week, and Comedy Central saw fit to destroy it, screw it, we’re phoning this one in”

Heck, I’m finding the season finale of Ugly Americans far more entertaining than “Crippled Summer”

It’s not the Worst…Episode…Ever, but it’s not a good episode either, on a scale of 1-10, i’d rate it a 3.5

So, did they say anything at all about the Muhammad controversy? I missed it tonight.

Nope, no references to 200 or 201, just a mediocre episode, not as bad as “Pee”, but not great either, totally forgettable and ignorable

I couldn’t disagree more. I laughed a lot.

Did anyone notice the other campers were based on famous cartoon characters? Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Droopy, Pete the Puma, (a somewhat obscure character, but I spotted him. Hhyeee!!!)

I also loved the boss and Mimsy. Now, were they doing Rocky and Muggsy, Sylvester and Benny, or Pinky and the Brain? Probably bits of all three teams.

It probably helps that Intervention is a guilty secret pleasure of mine.

Anyway, I loved it. Thought the ending was a little tame though. Just Towelie looking off into the sunset, and the final subtitles saying he’s been sober since April. Maybe if Towelie would’ve said after that, “Ahh, this bein’ sober (bleep) sucks.” and whipped out his crack pipe, I might’ve liked the ending better.

I did like the references to classic cartoon characters (Fudd, Porky, and Droopy et al…), I didn’t realize that “Intervention” was an actual TV show, but then again, I don’t watch reality TV, and in fact, hate the sodding things with a passion, I’d imagine if I watched “Intervention”, I’d be more amused by this episode

As it stands though, I find this episode forgettable

Hey, waitaminnit, that computer-duster stuff – it’s just compressed air, isn’t it?

Apparently, you can get high off it. Intervention did a whole episode on a girl who was addicted to it. She did other inhalants, but the show featured her buying a crapload of computer duster, and sucking it down in the car; much the way Towelie does in this show.

Did not know that.

Guess what we’re doing today, Ferb?

It’s not regular air. It’s difluoroethane, an easily compressed gas. Normally I wouldn’t quote from epinions.com, but it’s a nice summary of what I already knew and found looking online.:

*Difluoroethane is pretty nasty stuff for humans: it’s what’s known as a VOC (volatile organic compound). At this level of compression, it’s a supercooled liquid (it has a boiling point of -25° C or -13° F). In gaseous form, it suppresses respiration; in liquid form (which you can get by turning the can upside down) it can cause frostbite. When directed on electronic parts, however, the liquid contents expand rapidly to a dry, anti-static gas that leaves behind no residue.

Compucessory has theirs packaged with a “bitterant,” a nasty-tasting chemical that’s supposed to discourage “huffers” (no, I haven’t tasted it). Some vendors now require that buyers produce identification to verify their age when buying this and similar products. VOCs such as difluoroethane are considered persistent organic pollutants, though Compucessory avows that this particular product is “ozone-safe.”*

Was anybody else outraged by the advertisements leading up to this one? About how South Park is such an edgy show and what will they come up with next?

Yes! Pete Puma! I couldn’t quite place the characterization.

The huffing of the computer duster reminded me of this (satiric) video, particularly when Towlie says “It’s like walking on sunshine”, which the girl in this video says over and over.

Meet Allison, the teenage girl who inhales computer duster cleaner for fun, 24 hours a day

Narf! Same thing we do every night Brain! Try to take over the world! Zoit!

I also noticed that one resembled Beaky Buzzard.

Yes, Pete Puma and the Buzzard! That really made this episode.

God, that was painful to watch.

I find it hilarious in insight how Staples sells compressed air in 4 and 8 packs now.

I really liked it. It was nice to have a “lighthearted” episode as a palate cleanser - lighthearted for South Park, that is. I liked all the the references to old cartoons, particularly the “ukelele filled with C4” joke lifted from the “xylophone filled with TNT” from Show Biz Bugs, tune and all.

“The Tardicaca shark is the deadliest freshwater shark in Colorado”.

The site I was streaming it from cuts off the second half of the episode, but what I saw was really bad. I’m disappointed that they had to have the marijuana-smoking character turn into a meth/crack addict. Negative stereotypes, in my South Park?

I know. When will this awful stereotyping of towels end?

I enjoy watching Intervention and enjoyed immensely how they played off of Allison. That being said, I thought that this episode was the season’s weakest so far. It was like a cut and paste from Loony Toons with some Intervention plopped in to fill the gaps, meh.
That being said, I will definitely start using the phrase “Leave me alone, I’m walking on sunshine!” a lot now.
