I’m kind of surprised there isn’t a thread about this yet.
I thought it was only a so-so episode. The Wheel of Fortune thing was kind of funny, but most of the episode was a one-joke pony that ran out of steam and wasn’t as clever as they probably thought it was. I thought the thing between Cartman and the little person was kind of funny.
I’d give the ep a C. I think Parker and Stone kind of mailed this one in. Not a good sign for a season premiere. This show may be circling the shark cage.
I thought the whole treatment surrounding the colloquial use of the term to be right on. The persecution of the “Nigger Guys” by the rednecks-straight-out-of-Deliverance was an especially nice touch of irony.
The fight between Eric and the “Little Person” was classic (particularly at the beginning with the song by Disturbed going on) .
The reaction of the cameraman to the N_GGER puzzle coming up on Wheel of Fortune was priceless.
Yeah, I agree with the last poster. That was cringingly, painfully funny. Cartman was hysterical, and I hate myself for laughing as hard as I did at the little person. Overall, a great reaction to Michael Richards and the NYC ban on the N-word.
I really liked the throw away line about Jesse Jackson. It was something like this.
Not sure who said it: “Jesse Jackson is not the Emporer of all African Americans.”
Randy mutters: “Damn, he told me he was.”
The episode had its moments, the Little Person did little for me. The Randy story with Wheel of Fortune was funny but was weakened by the promos unfortunately.
I don’t know. Hi-def looks cleaner, no matter what the subject matter is. A comparison might be a low-bandwidth stream vs. a high-bandwidth on the internet. Sure, you don’t need high-bandwidth to get the sense of South Park, but it sure is nicer lookin’.
Anyhow, I watched it normal-def, and I think it’s the funniest South Park I’ve seen in a long time.
I thought it was hilarious. I hope I wasn’t the only person to figure out the WoF answer was “Naggers.” And I loved the Redencks “We don’t take kindly to people who don’t want to live in harmony with African-American’s around here.”
The shot of Stan’s family with all their faces buried in their hands as they were driving home after the WoF debacle was funny.
Cartman’s total inability to learn a single thing was funny and kind of had a point (outlawing words will never, ever have any effect on people like Cartman).
And I laughed at the Jesse Jackson scene. (“Apologize…yeah…apologize…”)
I felt like an idiot. I was sitting there thinking, “It’s obviously not niggers, that’s gotta be the joke, but what can it be? Noggers? Nuggers? Neggers? Naggers?” And for some reason, even when the letter was turned revealing the answer to be “NAGGERS,” it took about a second or two for me to understand the meaning as “those who nag.”
I must admit, I couldn’t come up with Naggers and I felt kind of stupid about it. I was seriously laughing at the wheel of fortune scene for about 10 minutes, great stuff. The flaw, for me, was that they let the Cartman/Little Person joke run a bit long. It was funny, though.
I loved this one. I did figure out “Naggers,” but even so you could tell where he was going. And the cheerful, self-assured way in which Randy dropped the N-bomb was perfect: absolutely dead-on “game-show idiom.”
Somehow, when Cartman just kept laughing and laughing, so did I. It just got funnier and funnier to me.
“Words are like bullets. I just let them pass right through me.”
Jesus, I thought this was a terrible episode! I’m no super-genius, but I knew where every joke set-up was going, the whole episode. And Cartman being a sociopath? Gee, that’s not been done before  Really, really disappointing. I give it a D.
I thought the naggers plot was I guess clever, but confusing- I was not sure what exactly they were parodying- and not super funny, but OK. The literal ass kissing was great.
The great thing about the little person plot was that occasionally the little person got the upper hand, like calling Cartman fatso and getting a few punches in, but Cartman never waivered. The little person losing his temper, and assuring everyone it was just to teach Cartman a lesson, that he was not upset with him, was great. And the actual animation of the little persons face and walk was hilarious- very realistic.
