In discussions about the possibility of setting up manned bases on the Moon, I was curious about comparing to what we currently spend to maintain a base at the South Pole. In particular, what is the total budget for the base, how many people (antarctic summer) are based there, and what is the current price per ton of shipping supplies there? I suspect that these figures will demonstrate what we’re really willing to pay for pure science.
