Southern California Straight Dope Shindig

Aw man… Looks like I won’t be able to make it, after all - I’m sure it’s going to be a real hoot! Of course, you’re all still invited up to Monterey on Feb. 18, for the second (in what appears to be a long string of) Northern CA Dopers’ gatherings (noon at El Torito). Be there or be square!

So that brings us up to 14.

I apoligize if I left anyone off the list.

Hopefully they have room for us all!

ok, here is another idea i had recently:

is anyone a fan of Ben Harper or Gomez?
they are playing at the universal ampitheater that day, 8:15pm, and i thought maybe some people can go to the show with me.
tickets are $26, so that might be a problem… but if anyone is interested , let me know. its convenient because the amphitheater is really close to gladstones…

what do you think?

Chief’s Domain - http://www.seas.ucla.edu/~ravi

I called today, and they have a banquet room, but it’s a $40 minimum per person. So I’m just going to make a straight up reservation.

Also, I’m going to make the res. for 4:30, to allow time for everyone to get there. Since I’m almost certain to get there first, I’ll hold a sign (seriously) that says, “Rilchiam” and you all can congregate around me until we’re all present and accounted for.

Cheers!

I’ll be there with Catrandom. I don’t know about the concert though.

Rilchiam, instead of a sign that you have to hold up, how about getting some solid colored helium balloons and a writing your name, or Straight Dope on them with a black magic marker and tying them to the back of your chair?

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

Good idea about the balloons, but how about writing Cecil Adams, instead of Straight Dope, to avoid any police interference.

This is gonna be fun. Its getting close, I cannot wait!

I was telling my Mom about this gettogether on the phone the other night. I realized, we have a good number of teachers showing up. Ursa, Highlander, Ruffian. Youse guys are all teachers, or work at schools right? Its not a great majority, but still to have 3 people in education out of such a small group, I guess that says something good about California’s educational system that you guys are straight dope fans. (Then again, I might have remembered wrong, and you guys might not even be in education)

Anyhoo, Just thought I would add some thoughts.

Save a spot for me…

Shared pain is lessened; shared joy is increased.

another vote for cecil adams.

i want to ask the host/hostess for the cecil adams party

Cecil Adams it is!

Thanks for all the work Rilchiam. A suggestion: I would have told everyone the reservations were at 16:00, and then made them for 16:30. I would make reservations for 2/3 of the number of people that are planning on attending, because there are always last-minute cancellations. And reservations under the name Cecil Adams sound like a good idea.

Of course, my fiancee told me last night “I just told Jane we can go to games night at her house on 26 February”, so I will probably have to leave around 17:30. But I still plan on attending!

I just hope it doesn’t rain, like it is today. But I’ll try to be there, regardless. “Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow…”

I found out today that I have available to me, if I want them, 4 free tickets to see Chick Corea & Gary Burton Duets at Royce Hall (UCLA Center for Performing Arts) on the night of the 26th. They are 12th row center orchestra seats. The concert starts at 8:00pm.

So I was wondering if any of the So. Cal. Dopers who will be at this gathering would like to go to this concert after the get-together. If Catrandom (who will be riding with me) and 2 others would like to see this concert, let me know so I can tell my boss (who’s the one that offered me the tickets) whether I want them or he should donate them back to UCLA.

For those who don’t know who Chick Corea and Gary Burton are, here’s what the concert brochure says about them -

“As individual performers, pianist/composer Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton are at the top of their class, stretching the bounds of possibility for their instruments in all directions. As one of the jazz world’s premier duos, these 1999 Grammy award-winning musicians unleash in each other an explosion of virtuosity and creativity, blending their adventurous and distinctly individual styles into a breathlessly vibrant and mercurial fusion. Performing a wide palette of musical styles, Corea also appears with Origin in an exploration of jazz roots.”

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

If noone else wants to go, I would love to see Chick Corea!

Hey chief! Forget tickets you have to pay for, go see this.

pat

Cool, Pat! First come, first served. I’m going to email Catrandom right now and see if she wants to go. I sure hope she likes jazz  That would leave one more person who could join us. Any other takers?

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

Which is not quite the same as being there with bells on

I shall indeed be there with the graciously driving Shayna, and I’m quite looking forward to it, too.

Catrandom

(Rudely replying to her own post) Yes, I’d love to go along for the jazz, and thank ye kindly for the offer, Shayna!

Catrandom

Hey there Catrandom - I sent you an email right after posting the message above. Then I got your email saying you hadn’t heard from me yet. I sent a reply, but since the first one didn’t go through, you might not get that one either, so I thought I’d leave a message here.

I’m so glad you want to come to the concert. You may walk in not being a jazz lover, but you won’t walk out without a new appreciation for its magic. I’m sure it will be an awesome concert.

And we have a 4th - Rilchiam said she’d come, too. I wish I could have gotten more tickets (now I feel kindof bad for not being able to take everyone from the gathering :()

I’m getting more excited to meet everybody as the day gets closer. I think this is going to be a blast!

dammit, its right near me too ! oh well, im already going to that other one …
perhaps next time pricciar!
