Southern California Straight Dope Shindig

Thanks for putting up the pix, Ruff. Believe it or not, it’s the first time a photo of me has ever been put online. Now I have something I can send Opal for my profile.

In case anybody missed my comments in the other thread, let my just say again what a good time I had and how impressed I am with the whole Southern California contingent. I only wish I’d had more time to talk to some of you. I barely had a chance to talk with Catrandom or Arnold. Hopefully I can rectify that at Shindig #2.

I think Johnny has the right idea. A pub with a back room or two would be ideal. The problem with restaurants is that it’s hard to mingle and they’re anxious about “table turnaround”. All a pub cares about is whether enough folks are drinking. Easier to deal with the tab individually that way, too. I’m a little concerned that Melen and Highlander picked up more than their share of the bill. If that’s the case, Melen, please email the rest of us so we can settle up.

If the King’s Head (A fine establishment, yet given to crowds on a weekend) doesn’t suffice, There’s about a dozen others all over town that I can recommend.

First I couldn’t pronounce Melin’s name right, now I can’t even spell it right. Sorry, Melin.

The Cat & Fiddle on Sunset Blvd. has an outdoor courtyard. It can get crowded on weekends, but there’s some “mingle room”. They also have a small back room, IIRC.

But Ye Old King’s Head gets my vote for the F&C! (And there’s the 3rd Street Promenade for those who get there early.)

I haven’t been to the 94th Aero Squadron at Van Nuys Airport recently, but they have a small pub downstairs and seating outside by the duck pond and runway. Very good prime rib and French onion soup, too. Hmmm… I may have to do a little recon…

hi,

another vote for : But Ye Old King’s Head in Santa Monica. it sounds like a cool place, i havent been there. how expensive is it?
also, anyone have an idea as for a time frame for the next one?

Wow! Looks like y’all had a great time. I wish I could’ve made it. Unfortunately I had a financial hiccup and was unable to attend, but please keep me on the list for future shindigs. I’d like to meet all of you.

And Rilchiam, thanks for suggesting some hotels. Your efforts won’t go to waste!

Yes, Melin, by all means let us know if you need more bucks! Shayna and I left early, and we were worried that we may not have left enough. So if you guys had to cover, speak up! (Unlike most offers of $$$$ on the 'Net, this one is legit.)

Time frame: Let’s see…gotta give people time to recover…how 'bout around Labor Day? And the Santa Monica locale sounds great to me, since I live on the West Side.

Catrandom, planning well in advance

I had an idea for a mini-doper meeting if anyone is interested.
I have been meaning to go down to LA for some good jazz for awhile now, but I just can’t get motivated, you know, who wants to drive all that way. Anyway, I figured making plans with some dopers will motivate me. I thought of it after reading Shayna’s bad jazz experience.

I did see the Pit thread about jazz, so I know that not all of us are interested in it. But, I am a big fan, and I felt bad about missing it on Saturday, so I thought this would be a fun idea. I mentioned it to chief, and he says he is always up for a concert. (I don’t know why he is an engineering student, he should start writing some concert reviews for Rolling Stone)

The two places I have been to are Billy Higgin’s World Stage, and the Belage Hotel. They were both great fun when I went.

I can’t tell if this is a silly idea or not. But, if not. Maybe we can do this as a mini-meeting.

pat

Don’t worry – the money was fine.

I LOVE 94th Aero Squadron, but I’ll confess that I’ve never been there with my husband – all of my memories of that place are associated with the S.O. just before him . . . . It does tend to get a bit pricey there, but it’s fantastic.

Let me get my deck built and I’ll throw a party. I’m already planning one for Highlander’s birthday in August, and MajorMD and PUNditOK may come out for it, so I’ll keep you, er, posted.

I don’t know what I can add to what’s been said, except that this was really a fantastic group of people. I was the luckiest, I think, because I was seated in the middle and had reasonable access to almost everybody. I had handsome men on either side of me (Arnold to my left, Ursa Major to my right) and across as well (pricciar) (no I didn’t sit with my husband, I can talk to HIM anytime! ;)).

My family got up to CityWalk early and let the boys go to a movie, telling 'em to come to the restaurant and ask for the “Adams party” when they were finished. When they got there, I tossed Eldest Son a twenty and told him to take his brothers and wander around for a bit, and buy themselves a burger or something. It cost me another $20 in bribes to Eldest Son . . . .

We had five women (four redheads – RangerJeff and UncleBeer, eat your hearts out!) and ten men, plus the three boys. I don’t know that I can do justice to each of them. I have to tell you, Shayna is GORGEOUS, and so nice (actually, there’s nobody in this group who was not nice). I’m looking forward to having her up to the house to get to know her better. I didn’t get to talk much to Catrandom, as she was on the other side of my husband, who was on the other side of Ursa Major. I hope to have more a chance in the future there, too.

Arnold’s SO is just lovely, and so sweet! What a good sport – to allow herself to be dragged along into this crowd. And Rilchiam (the former GripGrrl, for those on the old board) is a hoot – we had a blast, and she drove me back to my house in her car so that I could get her there without TOO much trouble over directions. It’s interesting to hear her talk about her work in film production, too.

Cowboy Greg looks like somebody we know, but we can’t figure who. Hey Cowboy, we’re sorry you missed the trip back to the house, and hope you can make the next one! Same with jab – we’ll figure out transportation for you next time. And wow, that’s a cool secret you got, which everybody will know soon!

Ruffian and her SO and I didn’t really have a chance to chat much. She is SO pretty – very striking. We tried to get together once before, in Pasadena, and somehow I didn’t make it to the right place, and this time we didn’t get a chance to talk, so we STILL have to work out a place for coffee, Laura!

I find it interesting that Arnold was concerned about being intimidated by my “strong personality,” since I was afraid of being intimidated by him – something about European men does that to me. Shame on my stereotypes – he’s wonderful, and he and his SO will make a perfect couple. I guess if I have hubby’s birthday party in early August they won’t be there, though, they have these other plans . . . .

Cheif struck me as both quiet and funny, an odd combination. Obviously a bright young man, and my boys sure enjoyed him. We kidded him and pricciar, 'cause they both got carded when they ordered a beer.

Johnny L.A. I didn’t get much chance to talk to – it was amazing when he walked up to the group standing outside the restaurant and it turned out that he and Cowboy Greg knew each other. JAB – I’m stealing that “it’s a small 'net” line of yours – I absolutely love it. It’s classic! I keep hearing about this sense of humor – wish he had come back to the house so we could have experienced more of it.

Pricciar – I think my boys would like me to adopt you as their brother, but dammit I am NOT old enough to be your mom! You guys should have seen him – Youngest Son in particular just plopped in Pat’s lap and stayed there. When a few of the group came back to my house for wine and conversation, Pat kept going from the “adults’” room (where he got to drink wine) to the “kids’” room, where he got to play videogames – or at least coach. Come back anytime!

Ursa Major and my hubby spent a lot of time doing teacher talk stuff, I think. He and I had some good laughs, too, over old stuff on the board, and memories of the former “PapaBear.” I do agree he’s not how I pictured him in my head (really, were ANY of us?) – I hadn’t really anticipated the “surfer” thing (but, catch this, a “surfer dude” who can make an intelligent and articulate paragraph!).

Just a whole bunch of fantastic people – not a troll in the bunch. And I KNOW I’m not doing justice to them all.

So let’s do it again, as everyone said, and SOON! Even if we can’t get the whole crowd together for a bit, we can do small groups (“okay everybody, time for breakout sessions!”).

Thanks for a grand time.

-Melin

Who is NOT Straight Dope Staff

Siamese attack puppet – California

I’m all for a smaller group shindig. Labor Day sounds great, and I adore Santa Monica–but honestly, I’d like to hang with y’all a little before then, too. Melin–I know several groovy coffee shops around the area. I’m sure we can hang again somewhere soon!

I love music, and am open to a jazz night; my s/o loves music even more than I (he has dual music ed and theory degrees) and even remained intrigued by the Chick Corea concert after hearing the description by Shayna and Cat, so he’d probably be game too. He’s open to the more…modern… style. (Read: weird, perhaps boring, unnerving.) I’m somewhat open to it.

Hm…my first double post up there. Whee.

And uh…Arnold’s European??

I also like the idea of a get-together at a house, where waitstaff won’t breathe down our necks. If Melin’s deck isn’t finished in time, I can host. My building is Party Central, so no one will complain about noise.

I should reiterate that Sons are all fine specimens; they definitely enhanced the gathering.

I’d like to see jab again, too, along with Cat, Shayna and Chief. Sorry I didn’t get down to your end of the table, but Pat can tell you, I could barely stand up without falling, the chairs were so tight.

I bet Laura is “Miss Othmar” to more than one of her students!

Arnold looks like Malcolm McDowell, circa Clockwork Orange. That’s a compliment.

Pat, I like the idea of going to hear jazz. Keep me informed, but don’t be offended if I plead poverty.

Rilchiam, who turns 30 on Thursday the 2nd of March. Tick…tick…tick…

Hey Ursa! Why don’t you have your e-mail up? I want to send you an MP3. If you are interested, e-mail me! ::yeah, it’s a CA surfer secret song ok? No, not Surf Punks  ::

Get off my vibe!

What I tell you three times is true.
The Hunting of the Snark.

My ex-g/f and I used to go there for dinner, and it was usually about $30 or so for dinner and several pints and a couple Irish whiskys. The “queen-sized” fish’n’chips fills me up, and they’re about $10.

Yeah, id does tend to get expensive. Great ambiance though.

Coffee? Did somebody say “Coffee”?

Democritus: Ah, the Surf Punks!

I was going to sing “It’s a small 'net after all…” but I was afraid you guys would stone me.

I’ve never been to an English pub. It sounds like fun. I’m game. (Once went to a fish ‘n’ chips shop in Victoria, British Columbia, though.)

Hey, if we go to Santa Monica, we might take a spin or two on the rides at the pier.

Yes, Ruffian, I’m sort of European. I was born in the USA (of swiss parents), but grew up in Switzerland (grade school, high school, started college there.) I’ve been living in the USA for 14 years now though, so I don’t seem European anymore. I will use my swiss ancestry when I’m in my Euro-Trash mood.

Well thank you. I’m usually told I look like Orson Welles, circa Paul Masson wine commercial.

As far as jazz goes, I’ll keep my eyes open, if I see any ideas I’ll post them on the board. I’m in for a second reunion.

I remember Ursa Major talking about the new Sacajawea coin during dinner, and now I see jab1 posting that someone brought one of the coins and showed it off? I didn’t see it. (pouting)

Arnold,
Yeah, I brought a sackie with me. They’re fun to spend, and even more fun to say!

Arnold, I was starting to think…“Yes you did, didn’t you?!” until I realized that wasn’t you in that seat anymore (Highlander, was it you? Now I can’t remember…) You’d already left with Elizabeth when Johnny took out the Sackie. An interesting coin; I’m not sure if I like it yet. Thus far, I’m leaning toward the positive.

English pub, eh? Why not! I’m in!

Count me in!

Sounds like great fun. Great ideas. But, I think we should have it before labor day. Thats so far away. I am no good at waiting patiently.(Unless I have gotten my holidays mixed up, Labor Day is the september one, right?)

pat

Yes, Labor Day is September.
I’m in favor of fish’n’chips, too! Or fission chips, if it comes to that.

Rilchiam, who turns 30 on Thursday the 2nd of March. Tick…tick…tick…

Looking at the calendar, I believe I may have found a date that is good. Well, I like it anyway.

April 1st ends up on a Saturday. At first I thought it was a bad day for a meeting. Then I realzied, April Fools Day is only a holiday in my mind, so it won’t be more crowded then usual.

I figured it was a month away, so plenty of time to recover.

And even if everyone says YES! but, just as an April Fool’s joke, they don’t show up, so I am the only one there. I don’t mind, because I will get Guinness and Fish and Chips out of the deal.

pat

I want all of you S. Cal people to show up at Ye Olde King’s head in Santa Monica on 1 April. I had so much fun at the last meeting that I want to treat everybody. If you so wish, hire a limousine and arrive in style. When you arrive at the restaurant, order anything off the menu you want, and spare no expense. I will pay for everything. In accordance with the english theme, I think it would be appropriate if everyone wore a tweed suit. If you don’t have one, purchase one and have the store put it on my tab.

P.S. Since I’m driving all the way from South Orange County, I might be late, so don’t wait for me.
