Southern Christian fundamentalist infiltration of politics?

Someone said in a pit thread that an article appeared in Atlantic Monthly recently about a movement by a specific brand of Southern Christian fundamentalism to infiltrate American politics from the 50’s on. Could someone summarise the article and give their opinions on this? Seems like an interesting matter, as American politics really has been dominated by particular viewpoints for the past couple of decades, though there is much more variety at the grassroots level.

Take a good look at Karen Armstrong’s The Battle for God for extensive background on what you’re talking about, with information on Jewish and Islamic fundamentalism in parallel chapters for your further reading pleasure.

I don’t read the Atlantic, but IMHO the engire thing is right on target.

bolding mine, numbers in brackets mine

  1. Who said?
  2. Which pit thread?
  3. What article? Author?
  4. What issue?

I nominate UnoMondo.

And a cite would be heavenly.

NaSultainne, if the OP knew, he wouldn’t need our help. Damn, you are putzy today.

Would that be the organization Timothy LaHaye belongs to, the one that wants to replace democracy with a theocracy and stuff?

Damn, but you’re being defensive today. The OP knew 1), that someone in a pit thread 2), quoted an article 3), from the Atlantic Monthly 4) regarding some discussion of religious groups entering into politics.

The OP did not provide one single, solitary lead with which to locate this source. No pit thread identified, no poster identified, no author, no article named…you do get my point, don’t you? And don’t think I didn’t give it a try, either. I looked up Atlantic Monthly, April, March Jan/Feb issues, and I didn’t find any article fitting the parameters set forth in the OP. (I did stop long enough to read an article by David Brooks, “Kicking The Secularist Habit”, in case you’re interested.)

Now, I certainly don’t mind if someone has, oh say, a humble opinion on a given subject and wishes to partake of a lovely conversation regarding same, in which case one would reasonably presume to find said OP in IMHO. If one wishes to debate a subject of his/her choosing, one should provide the thrust of the argument and supply either documentary support or site a cite, for pete’s sakes.
Is this really so much to ask?

I was wrong about the Atlantic Monthy, and I apologise. The actual magazine was Harper’s.

This was said by presidebt in this Pit thread

So, if someone with access to Harper’s (I’m not in the US) could tell the Board more about this fascinating matter, I would be thankful.

Jeebus, Unomundo, the one actual lead you gave in your OP was WRONG. WTG.

Yes, and I said I was sorry. But surely I’m not the only who confuses Harper’s and The Atlantic.

UnuMondo

I feel very odd doing this, considering how often the two of us have clashed in the recent past, but…

Geeze, people! Give UnoMundo a break here. We all mess up! He did like you asked, dredged up the thread, and found out he mentioned the wrong magazine. He then apologized.

Get off his case here.

Wow, you guys are slack.

Jesus Plus Nothing: Undercover Among America’s Secret Theocrats ought to be a place to start.

If that’s not it, you can return to www.harpers.org and see if you can find it yourself.
