Southern stereotypes and casual slurs

If you would bother to look at profiles, you would notice that I’m from North Carolina, so yea, I’d say I’ve been to the South. Southern born and bred. Excuse me but I don’t seem to see the same things that you do. It must be the neighborhood you live in.

Way down at the bottom in tiny six point text. The bullet is green and it says True at the top of the page. This is a pretty lame trick to play for a site that is trying to expose urban legends. They’re passing one off themselves. Shame on snopes.

Portwest-

My own experience is that racism exists wherever there are large numbers of blacks. (North, south east or west.) Just a guess, but in those places you have lived where there was no blatant racism, did you also find that there were no blacks (or relatively few blacks)?

It’s easy to be self-righteous in a vacuum. But come on. There are no racists in Boston? And I forget…where was Archie Bunker supposed to be from? Think back on all the unrest in recent months over police harassing or killing black suspects. Have any of those incidents been in the South? Nope.

Anywhere folks from different backgrounds come together, racism rears its ugly head. It’s a sad fact of human nature.

AHA, I’ve got you there, Ultress. You are from **North[/] Carolina! Yankee!

The folks in SC never seem to get used to that joke.

Having lived for years in NC and GA, I think that people are more suspicious of other races. There is more tension between blacks and whites and a lot of self imposed segregation. I don’t know if this translates into racism, or isolationism. But It is a hell of a lot more relaxed in Colorado.

I guess so, because I see it every day of my life, many, many times a day. Maybe NC is far enough North that it escapes severe redneckism. Let me again stress that I’m not exaggerating here.

I come from a small town. Each classroom of 20 kids would have maybe 2 black kids. Racisim was simply not tolerated. There are far more blacks here. Racism is tolerated and practiced openly. Who knows, maybe you’re right. All I know is that I see far more racism here than I ever did back home and it’s sickening. I just want to knock these stupid fuckers out. Luckily, I’m not a violent person, so I don’t.

Sorry, spoke-, I hadn’t noticed that you were addressing Portwest when you posed that question.

Neutron, you are full of shit.

Yes, there are shitkickers and Rednecks everywhere. In fact, some of the biggest hillbilly freaks I’ve ever seen (complete with sloped foreheads, crooked teeth, and dunce caps) were in central Pennsylvania. Western Massacusetts and New Hampshire have a fair share as well…

Seriously, when I went to college, I had to put up with the same kind of shit that Spoke mentioned. Just because I have a Texas accent (I actually don’t have it anymore…) does not mean I am a moron, as people from New York and California seemed to want to assume. My dad who sounds like Jeb Clampett on the telephone, holds two masters degrees in education. He grew up here, but it doesn’t make him stupid.

Nor are we all racist, either. During our freshman year, a Korean classmate, who is now a dear friend of mine, said he was honestly scared to go to Texas because he was afraid that he would be in danger. Now, I will admit, however, that we do have our fair share of racial attitudes. Right after I moved to Houston from Boston, someone explained that the reason a certain suburb had gone downhill from it’s mid-80’s pinnacle was that now it’s “all black.” But from my own personal experience, it’s no worse than the riots in South Boston a few years ago when they tried to integrate the schools. There are racists and rednecks everywhere - but for some reason they all got allocated to the South.

So I do agree that many of the stereotypes are based on the truth, but TV your original post is very good - it’s not a very fair stereotype.

And long rambling unorganized posts are what happen when you cut and paste too much.

I had an almost identical experience when I was in school. I invited a group of friends to come visit my home in rural Georgia. A Jewish kid in the group absolutely would not go. He was convinced that if he should venture into the rural south some horrible act of violence would be visited upon him by toothless rednecks. Nothing I could say would persuade him otherwise.

I spent my youth in a small southern town and never once witnessed an anti-Semitic act or heard an anti-Semitic remark uttered by anyone who lived there. We had a couple of Jewish families in our town, if I remember right (not a huge population admittedly); they got along fine with everyone. Yet somehow, we are supposed to be a bunch of rabid anti-Semitic goobers.

I fully concur with johnnyharvard, Neutron Star. You are full of shit.

I have lived in the South, and believe me, white Southerners are not nearly as prejudiced as Hoosiers are. Many Yankees are just as bigoted; they’re just too cowardly and fork-tongued to say what they really think unless they know you well.

As for the South’s educational system, I note the southern states have given us George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, James Madison blues, Dixieland, New Orleans-style jazz, bluegrass, William Faulkner, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert E. Howard, Carson McCuller, Eudora Welty, Sharyn McCrumb, Hunter S. Thompson, Jesse Stuart, Robert Penn Warren, many of the finest soldiers our military has had and some of the finest damn cookin’ on the planet.

Not bad for a bunch of “rednecks,” is it?

Asshole.

Please insert comman between Madison and blues.

Please spell comman as comma. Goddamn, I got up too early this morning.

I must not have run across them in my 19 years living there. Maybe you’re referring to some of the isolated Appalachian people.

Like I keep saying, not all Southerners are stupid. You must have missed that in my posts. Or maybe you chose to ignore it. I’m saying I see a hell of a lot more idiocy here than I ever did at home. I also see a hell of a lot more corruption. NOBODY here pays speeding tickets. Everyone has a friend who gets them “fixed.” This practice is unheard of in PA. And like I said, my state has yet to re-elect someone who was under indictment at the time of the election for crimes committed while in office.

My friends who have lived in other parts of the country, California for one tell me the same thing. Californians, white ones that is, are not biogoted towards blacks, but they sure as hell do hate the hispanics. My cousins who live in rural southern Indiana are not bigoted and think it’s just horrible the way some of their Virginia relatives are, but then there are no blacks where they live, very few. Yet they vacation every year in Florida and come back with tales of how the Cubans and Latinos have ruined their vacation paradise.

Yes, Ultress I would expect you to say that since you are one of my Southern sisters who insists on defending that damned flag. So don’t go crying foul when the non-Southern dopers flame your silly little southern belle ass! I’ve also noticed that you don’t have the good sense to stay out of the "does God exsist threads. That’s a no-win situation in case you haven’t figured it out yet.

And yes you are right they may not be flying those damned flags on top of their houses but the “stars and bars” are EVERYWHERE down here. People have them tatttooed on their bodies for goodness sake!

Look, even the blacks down here are prejudiced against other blacks! We have a town near by, Charles City, it is the site of many old plantation homes and an indian reservation. This area is predominately black, however the blacks in Petersburg don’t like the Charles City blacks. Why? Because most of the Charles City blacks are mixed with white or indian. They call them “redbones”. When I was a kid I heard them referred to as “high yellow” by the whites.

Although I will say one thing. I don’t think you can compare my state Virginia to somewhere like Arkansas or Louisiana either. The cultures differ from state to state just a little. And Louisiana has a separate culture all of it’s own from any other state, even southern states. It is predominately Catholic, and largely French/Acadian with Spanish influences. There is a large population of blacks of Carribean extraction. Louisiana is pretty much an island unto itself even in the South.

Hey, guess what, Virginians are out and out snobs about every other southern state. You should hear the jokes I’ve been hearing all my life about the ignorant Carolinians. So there you have it. I tried to tell you people before in the other threads that there was a lot of predjudice down here. I will give my bigoted friends one thing though, you’re talking about Yankees…even the folks down here that don’t care for blacks are more tolerant of their own blacks! They don’t like you Yankess sending your blacks down here! They figure we’ve got enough of our own or something. You know, kind of we’ll keep ours, you keep yours. At least they’re loyal in that respect.

I think it is a little silly to think that only ignorance exsists in the south. I know we do have our own brand, and some states are a little more backward than others generally speaking. But I’m wondering if some rural Louisianian is any less educated than some guy from say Queens who’s never been more than 40 city blocks from his own home.

Boy, did this thread ever deteriorate quickly.

You can name all the individuals you want. I’m talking about people in general. Your averge joe on the street.

I DIDN’T SAY ALL SOUTHERNERS ARE STUPID!!! Geez…

This is a very good point. Like I said, I don’t have much (if any) experience with Southerners from other states.

Yes racism exists elsewhere. I never said it didn’t. I’m saying that it’s much, MUCH more open and socially accepted here than it is up North. Yes, perhaps you can find a few backwoods towns up North where racism is tolerated. In general, though, it is not. In the South, I’m sure there are places where racism isn’t tolerated as much. In general, though, it is. Thats been my experience, at least in Louisiana. YMMV

I think you’ll get those ignorant neighbor jokes no matter where you are. In Pennyslvania, people wore t-shirts that read “Maryland has crabs. Pennsylvania has intercours.” (Intercourse being the name of a small Amish town) Here in Louisiana I here a lot of jokes about Texans. I think most of this is good natured ribbing rather than outright hatred.

If you told me that Eastern Kentucky was full of uneducated, racist, deer-hunting, pickup-driving, Hank Jr.-listening redneck hicks, I would agree with you, because there are many such people.

If, however, you extrapolate that since Dr. J is from Eastern Kentucky, he is clearly an uneducated, racist, deer-hunting, pickup-driving, Hank Jr.-listening redneck hick, you can bite my ass (just to keep this Pit-worthy).

That said, I have come across this a lot. However, for everyone who has given me serious grief over being from KY, there have been at least two or three who thought it was a cool place to be from. (I agree.)

Interestingly, a friend of mine from Hartford, CT (who eventually moved to Nashville) once told me that the only two groups of people she had almost universally liked when she met them were Southerners and bikers. Go fig.
