I’d really like to see a high speed camera showing what this stuff at work, but apparently the “cloth” will harden like a shell if any part of it is impacted (like in an accident) to protect the wearer, thus eliminating the need for plastic inserts and thick layers that impede movement and breathability.
I could use that at work.
What if you were using this materiakl on a motorbike in the woods and glanced off a tree. Would your arm be frozen in the position at impact and render you incapable of continued vehicular control?
The linked site says it goes back to normal when the impact stops. I wish they had a video of it on their website, it seems like it could be pretty cool stuff.
Might make riding in the rain a bit difficult.
Sounds fantastic, like the bulletproof jackets Louis Wu wore in Niven’s Ringworld. I wouldn’t want it throughout my entire outfit - if my bike goes into a slide I still want enough movement to get the bike between me and the tree I’m sliding towards. On the other hand, you could engineer it throughout the entire outfit to give you the same movement as a suit of plate armor, for example.
Did it say anywhere what this stuff is projected to cost?
hmmm… plates would make a lot more sense than what I had in mind.
Perhaps there could be a urine sensor in the trousers. If you piss yourself the armor is activated.
I’m not sure if this is the same stuff or not, or even if it is authentic, but if it is real it’s pretty cool.
YouTube video w/audio.
A link on their “How It Works” page gives a little animation of the stuff in action. Unfortuantely, it gives no indication as to actually how is can to the things they say it can do.
Still, if we take it as face value, this would be revolutionary in a great many areas.
Anyone know the stock symbol for Dow Corning?
DOW.
No that’s Dow Chemical. Turns out that Dow Corning is equally owned by The Dow Chemical Company and Corning, Incorporated. It isn’t traded directly.
