OK, this may seem like a dumb question, but how does this work? Do the interviewees talk to the voices of the characters? And what about the characters themselves? I know that there was a couple of old Space Ghost cartoons back in the 70’s and 80’s, and the story behind the Coast to Coast show is that Moltar and Zorak (and later Brak) are his prisioners and are forced to help him with his talk show. But are the characters newly drawn or are they cut outs from the old cartoons (I’m not sure how I came up with this theory; I think I read it somewhere)?
I love Space Ghost Coast to Coast. I wish they were still making them. A couple of episodes rival The Simpsons’ best.
The guests don’t talk to someone in character, but to one of the writers or Mark Lazzo, who was the producer behind SGC2C (and I believe a VP of programming at the Cartoon Network now). Occasionally you will see someone ask who they are supposed to be talking to, and forgetting Zorak’s name or something. I think the show was partially written around the interviews and partially written, or at least concieved, before hand.
There seems to be very little original animation on the show. Most all of the characters seem to be cut outs. It looks like there are only four or five different versions of Space Ghost himself, and even fewer Zoraks and Moltars.
If you have never seen the show, I highly recommend it. I record it every Sunday night hoping to get the Peter Fonda epsode on tape. “Great. You just blasted Ted Turner’s brother-in-law.”
OK. So I’m a dork. So what.
Braaaaaaaaaaack
“that was the easiest jar of mayonnaise I ever won!”
Someone left the cake out in the rain…
Hey! I was gonna EAT that cake!
I love beans, hey hey hey!
I love beans, EVERY day!
Beans are an excellent source of protein.
I LOVE BEANS!
My favorite show! I’ve been meaning to ask this same thing. The interviewees look so perplexed sometimes that you know there’s minimal scripting.
My personal fav: the Chuck Heston interview where SG tells him his teeth look yellow. You can see the wind go right out of Moses’ sails:D.
and I also love corn!
All kinds of corn!
ALL KINDS OF CORN!
Its amazing what you can do with an Avid and a few old animation clips.
While some of the interviews appear to run intact others are obviously reconstructed after the fact. Some interviewees are good natured about everything while others don’t seem to get it or they become hostile. If the interviewees answers to SG’s questions aren’t funny the questions are rewritten. Frequently this results in the interviewee looking foolish which just proves that you shouldn’t joke around with intergalactic superheroes.
But why all this talk of beans?
It was a song that Brack (sp?) did. I have it on a compilation CD, along with the “Corn” one, which is part of a song called (I think) “Some things that I like”.
"High in fiber, low in fat!
Hey I bet you didn’t know that!
When I eat beans I sit in my own little cloud…
Nobody comes to visit me… In my little clouddddddd!
I don’t know why!
Maybe cuz I’m pinchin’ muffins!"
For more, get the “Space Ghost’s Musical Barbecue” CD - I am so proud to be an owner .
Time to head to the cafeteria for some gravy.
Ok, so who else got the “All Hail Brak!!” T-shirt?
They got gravy in the cafeteria!?
I recall seeing an episode (or maybe it was a special …) in which they didn’t show the animated characters, they showed the people sitting around speaking the lines, and working on the interviews.
I don’t remember it clearly, though … it might have been a behind-the-scenes special and then they showed the finished product at the end. One thing I recall is that the voice for Space Ghost is a very tall man, and he looks like a funny guy.
I seemed to get the impression that almost all the interviews are at least slightly set up. It looked like the interviewees do know something about what’s going to happen, so some of the confusion/belligerence is probably pretended.
Look! Shoot a ray, and you get a word!
<OBVIOUS PARODY!>
and in case you all haven’t noticed yet —
Nothing prances like a pony!. Check out the home companion, transcripts of the shows. Maybe I’ll look for what I was talking about.
One time I hired a monkey to take notes for me in class. I would just sit there with my mind a complete blank while the monkey scribbled on little pieces of paper. At the end of the week the teacher said, “Class, I want you to write a paper using your notes.” So I wrote a paper that said “Hello, my name is Bingo. I like to climb on things. Can I have a banana? Eek eek.” I got an F. When I told my Mom about it she said “I told you never trust a monkey!” The end
And don’t forget to relax with a refreshing game of Blast Zorak (Win95/98 only), downloadable here.
But SG’s Amazing Inviso-Site is a ripoff.
I got some strudel in my noodle and it’s name is Minky Boodle.
<female voice over> Space Ghost, you must blow up the Hover dam.
<Space Ghost> Can I say good by to Charton first?
<female voice over> No, you must do it now before someone beats you to it.
I never gave it much thought. Why would taping it be any different than movies like Space Jam or Who Framed Roger Rabbit, where they have a person stand in for the toon?
Actually, he looks frighteningly like a roommate of mine from college, so much so that I had to do double-takes everytime they showed him from a different camera angle.
The episode in question is Table Read and it’s hilarious, particularly seeing as how, as the linked page mentions, “fans probably won’t know what the heck is going on in this episode until they see ‘Fire Ant.’”
