Kind of a boring question, but…in the Soviet (and later Russian) space program, was there ever an equivilant to NASA’s Manned Maneuvering Unit designed or built? And, if so, was it (The Russian version) ever used operationally?
I heard tell there was a sort of MMU ‘gun’ used by the Soviets in the early days of their space exploration. It was basically a nitrogen canister with a handle. I can’t imagine it was very useful, though, since it’d be a challenge to point it in some directions, what with the clunky space suit technology back then. I think the Americans did the same thing, but some time in the eighties or so, we switched over to the oh-so-cool MMU and haven’t looked back since.
