Space Tourist

So I’m reading about this little spat between the Russians and the US over sending up a tourist to the International Space Station.

Evidently the guy has paid about 20 million bucks for the privledge of a ride into space.

Without taking a stance on this particular issue, I started wondering just how much you would have to charge to break even if you sent up just one tourist per trip. I’m not looking for the cost of just sending a tourist into space, I’m looking for the cost of replacing an astronaut on an already scheduled trip with a tourist.
There would be training costs, the loss of an astronaut, the loss of scientific experiments, an extra burden on the ISS, and then all the related going into space expenses.
Anybody have a clue how much we would have to charge?

Not sure if this is a complete answer to your question, but I didn’t want to see the question dissappear.

Anyway, check out the sci.space.shuttle FAQ, at

This is the shuttle, and, IIRC, it was the russians who sent up the astronaut, and they use cheaper launchers. Anyway, the marginal cost is $100mil for a launch. Crew of, I think (up to) 8, giving us $12.5mil. Where do I sign up?
