Spaceship One

I saw a show about the Dick Ruttan Spaceship One the other day. It’s hard to believe that something that simple went into space. One question though - why do they have some many portholes instead of a windshield/window or whatever you would call it? It would seem to me that all those portwholes would just be confusing.

My guess would be weight. One big window would probably weigh more than several smaller ones. And I bet they’re placed so that from inside you have a pretty good view if you’re in the pilot’s seat.

From here:

Also it’s Burt Rutan, not Dick. That dude is my hero, so don’t mess up his name. :stuck_out_tongue:

Dick is Burt’s brother. Dick has done some notable stuff, too, being one of the two pilots who flew the Voyager around the world without refueling and, oh yes, he helped build that one, too.

But Burt’s the fellow who designs the funky looking aircraft.
