Last week I had SPAM musubi: a slice of grilled SPAM on top of a block of rice (non-vinegared), wrapped with a strip of nori, and a little teriyaki on top. Wasabi on the side. It was good.
As an ex-Hawai’i resident, I must say that it is a culinary delight. Every now and then I get a hankering (and I usually end up eating by myself-- mainlanders are spam-hatehs).
My dad liked SPAM. He liked to make SPAM salad. It’s just like ham salad, only with SPAM. (Or maybe not just like ham salad – dad didn’t like mayonaise.) He’d grind the SPAM in a meat grinder and add sweet pickle relish and Miracle Whip. Chill, and make sandwiches with Wonder Bread. Okay, that’s going to make a lot of people gag. Miracle Whip, SPAM, and squishy white bread. But it was actually pretty good.
IIRC most Hawai’ian recipes call for the SPAM to be cooked, while we mainlanders tend to eat it uncooked. Maybe that’s why people (even ones who have never tasted it) don’t like it. I have to say though, that it’s very salty when cooked. It’s like bacon-salty. The rice block cuts the salt nicely.
Really funny coincidence that I saw this at a restaurant last night for the first time. I didn’t realize it was an actual thing.
I had Spam and eggs last night. I have it every once in a while, though I now opt for the “lite” version. There’s 2/3 a block in my reefer. I think I’ll make Spam S.O.S. for dinner.
Hawai’ian restaraunts have been springing up around here like mushrooms lately. And a guy at work is from there and brings “Spam Sushi” to work sometines, so I know and love it.
Yeah people knock it, but look at how much is on the shelves at your kocal supermarket.
Peace,
mangeorge
One of the tastiest meals I had on my trip to Hawaii featured the turkey version of SPAM. We were staying in Hana, and went down to Hasegawa’s Store to grab some groceries for dinner. My girlfriend whipped up an incredibly simple dinner of green beans, sautéed onions and SPAM over brown rice. Delicious!
I love SPAM. Unfortunately, kaylasmom doesn’t share my fondness for it, so I don’t tend to bring it into the house.
On the upside, Michaela just put on a pot of rice and asked for loco moko for breakfast.
Dude. SPAM in your reefer?! That’s carrying the munchies a bit far, don’t you think?
In your reefer? Pah!
You haven’t lived until you’ve injected SPAM.
Or maybe “once” you’ve injected SPAM. I dunno, something like that. :shrugs:
No.
As someone (me?) once said; "There’s no such thing as “Too Far”.
Okay, okay. Sheesh!
In my fridge.
injected ??? Real connaisseurs know that you snort SPAM !
Hey, we’re addicted to Spam musubis, too. I make 'em at home sometimes and we pretend we’re in Hawai’i while we eat them. They’re awfully easy to make:
Cook two cups of Japanese rice according to directions. Slice up one regular can of Spam into six slices, and fry them slowly until they’re crisp and have rendered out a lot of their fat. Transfer them to a plate of teriyaki sauce and let them sit in it. Slice two sheets of nori seaweed into three very broad strips each.
Using the Spam can which you have rinsed in salted water, pack it with enough warm rice to form a rectangular cake about the size of a bar of soap. Dip your fingers in salted water, too, so the rice doesn’t stick to them. Smack the can down on the counter to cause the rice to fall out, and then top it with a slice of teriyaki’d Spam. It just fits the can-sized rice cake, get it? Then wrap a “belt” of nori around it. Voila, Spam musubi!
We like them for breakfast accompanied by pineapple chunks.
I’m tempted to run to the store and get some spam and nori now ! Thanks.
In High School selling spam musubi was how we paid for our trip to Molokai. You’d go into a room and sell 20 like that. snaps fingers
Just got back from one of those Hawai’ian places I mentioned. Had me some (3) musubi. Yum! Spam could’ve been a little crisper, but I know how long it takes to fry that stuff.
I saw loco moko on the menu. Next time, I’m full. Rice, hamburger, eggs, and gravy. What’s not to like.
Spam S.O.S, coming right up (in a couple hours).
OMG you just invoked the glorious loco moco. I am so hungry now. Argh.
kaylasdad99, post #7, invoked it. I just wanna try it.
Johnny L.A., who cares naught for my arteries, is the one who brought this whole thing up.
They have loco moco at Ohana (where I got the SPAM musubi). I’d never had it before. Actually, I still haven’t.
‘Loco Moco’.
Okay, I like the name.
‘Da bruddah’s favorite’.
Hm. Might be worth a try.
‘A grilled hamburger patty…’
Looking good…
‘… & a fried egg…’
Well… Once in a while an egg on a burger is OK.
‘… over rice…’
Rice is good.
‘… all smothered with brown gravy & onions’.
SCREEEEECHHHHHH! (That’s the sound of my mind hitting the brakes.) Oh, my. I can feel my arteries hardening just reading the description! Oh, and you can add bacon to it for a dollar. It sounds delicious. But… wow.
Be fair! I hadn’t said anything about loco moco!
