Spam

What is the best thing to do with spam? Sould I:

1.Delete it?

2.Block or filter the sender?

3.Report it to abuse@whateverISP.com?

Thanks

I was told to send a copy of the spam in question to the abuse@your service provider marked with the header RE: abuse of e mail.

If you are able to, put blocks on your account (and I have, spam can still come to you) it takes a lot of * your time * to keep copying and sending it back to the service provider. I got sick of it, and just kept deleting the unwanted stuff.

Good luck, it’s annoying to have to deal with it, isn’t it? I even wondered today why is it called ‘SPAM’ and aren’t the makers of Spam ticked off about that?? I would be if I were they.

Heh, Anti Pro, have you ever eaten Spam? My mom used to make me Spamwiches when I was young…I call that child abuse.

I am getting so annoyed with email spam.

I have blocked a ton, and have deleted two tons. I have just recently begun reporting it to the ISPs involved. Sometimes it is so hard to figure out where to send it because it originates from one address, to reply or be removed is another address, and it comes through a free email like hotmail or yahoo.

I could waste a lot of time forwarding all this spam, or I could delete it.

I keep thinking of all the time these spammers must waste setting up the accounts so they can spam. Do they ever make any money? Does anyone ever respond to spam?

Thanks

I had heard that junk email was named “Spam” in reference to the Monty Python Spam skit.
(Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam)
Don’t know if it’s UL or not.

Gilligan,

There is one other plausible explanation:

In British military slang, a “spam medal” is a medal which is awarded to all members of a force. The term originated with the 1939-45 star, whose pink ribbon resembled the colour of spam, but the concept of spam = something distributed indiscriminately is still there.

The general consensus is that it derives metaphorically from the Monty Python sketch. If you recall the sketch, a couple of people are sitting in a diner trying to order, while a crowd of Vikings (never mind) behind them begin chanting “Spam, spam, spam, spam” over and over again, eventually drowning out all other conversation. So it is with junk postings on Usenet-- they eventually get so obstrusive as to overwhelm normal discussions.

There are a few alternative explanations, such as the one TomH has, or the explanation that it resembles “the mess you get if you drop a can of Spam into a fan.”

Hormel, the manufacturer of SPAM, sides with the Monty Python explanation: www.spam.com/ci/ci_in.htm . This same page indicates that they have no objection to the use of the term, but ask that internet “spam” be distinguised from the food (-ish) SPAM by means of fully capitalizing the latter.

Off-topic, but anyway.

I like SPAM, and there have been many times when I have sat down for a movie with a jar of mayo, can of SPAM, bread, and cheese, and I would make SPAM sandwiches until I either ran out of one of the supplies, or I got full. (Typically, the former.)
