I found out tonight that my long held beliefs were correct. Fire’s cool. Fire on a Palm tree, not cool. Okay, it was, but not a very good idea.
For the 4th of July, I went to my great aunts house. We ate, watched a movie, and when it was dark, we went outside to do fireworks. As is tradition, we start with sparklers. All is going well until I see me cousin (2nd cousin?) Breanna near a Palm tree moving the sparkler through the air. I then see a spark (get it, sparker) fly onto the tree.
It stays there just enough so I can shout to bring attention to the fire waiting to happen. Just when others look, the fire then spreads to the top. Breanna’s mother (no idea what that makes her to me, all I know is that we’re related) grabs the little cup of water she’s drinking, and proceeds to try and put out the flames with it. It may have helped, if she would have got the water on the tree. But as we all know, those trees are sneaky little bastards. Always dodging and weaving and such.
Then comes my great aunt to the rescue. She jumps over bushes, grabs and turns on a water hose (damn, she moves fast), and hands it to my mother’s boyfriend, getting everyone wet in the process. He then puts out the tree.
Poor Breanna though. This incident is going to be brought up for the rest of her life. In 10 years, she’ll be bringing her boyfriend home and her family will bring up the palm tree on fire incident.
All in all, this has been a fun 4th of July. I’m just glad it happened so we can make fun of this, and not talking about a tragedy.
