How can I learn to make that throaty “rrr” sound? It’s like that “rroooowwrr” throat sound people make at sexy things, but I can’t do it! Is it a physical thing or can it be learnt?
Can you say “chutzpah”? It is a lighter version of the initial sound in that. Yes, it can be learned, but it is very hard to keep on saying it, at least for me it is. In isolation I can say it, but in a conversation I revert to my good old American r. My wife does better, but she is a natural mimic (you should hear her do Brooklyn) and lived in France for a year.
It can be learned but it helps if you have a native French speaker around to listen to. Try gargling while making vocal sounds. No kidding. It gets you accustomed to feeling where the sound has to come from. Also practice touching the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth to make a kind of “guh” sound, as far back as possible. When you make the French “r” you are not actually touching, but practicing this will help develop control and coordination in that part of your tongue.
