Recently the law in Ireland has been amended to allow the sale of Absinthe. A green annise oft favored by renaissance artists. It had been banned for many years because it hallocinogenic properties.
Anyone know the active ingredients here? Anyone tried it?
FYI I know it can be brought in U2’s club The Kitchen. I saw a bottle there last night.
A lot of drugs illegal in one place are legal in another. Cocaine can be bought in England at the pharmacy. Marijuana is legal in Alaska, Arizona & California (some parts anyway). I have a wonderful handy invention called a dictionary:
worm•wood "werm-'wud\ noun [ME wormwode, alter. of wermode, fr. OE wermod; akin to OHG wermuota wormwood] (15c)
1 : artemisia; esp : a European plant (Artemisia absinthium) that has silvery silky-haired leaves and drooping yellow nearly globular flower heads and yields a bitter dark green oil used in absinthe
2 : something bitter or grievous : bitterness
Absinthe is pretty good, a shot can put a weak one on your ass. But the purebreds like me take it like water.
Its nothing like alcohol. More like a whack at the brainstem
I have no cites for this, other than a radio program I heard about six months ago. In it, the importer of the new and approved absinthe explained that the dangerous wormwood in the original had been replaced with a similar but harmless relative. I believe, but am not certain, that the substitute also lacked traditional absinthe’s hallocinogenic properties. I don’t think it was originally banned because of these prperties, but because it is poison. I think the radio program was either one of the NPR news shows or “Dining Out with Gene Burns” broadcast out of San Francisco.
Marijuana is legal in Arizona? With prescription, do you mean? I know in CA, they fine you the equivalent of a traffic ticket, but here in Phoenix… everyone keeps their pot smoking on the down low.
Ignatz-- It WAS NPR, and I think it was more than a year ago that it was originally broadcast. Now, if I could just learn to freaking POST hot hyperlinks into my TEXT here I’d be more than delighted to go and find the damned site. <sob> Oh, lawdy, how can I learn to do that>?
