Last night I got two calls from people wanting me to renew my subscriptions. The first was for Yankee which I had renewed last month at the very end of the subscription. I had just gotten the next issue and it said Feb 02 so obviously it was on their computer. The next call was for Flex magazine which I let expire on purpose. Now I don’t think either call was from the magazine company.
Is there companies out there that get paid to renew expiring subscriptions ? How much money can they make on such a small amount ? Debt collection companies get a percentage but it is usually on a much larger scale than a simple subscription.
There are companies (think Publisher’s Clearing House) whose entire reason for being is to get you to subscribe and renew subscriptions. No, they don’t get much money per subscription, but they deal in volume. You may remember a story line on the Roseanne sitcom a few years ago when she lost her job at the factory and was selling magazine subscriptions over the phone.
The magazine publishers hate these services, because they can actually wind up paying the subscription house more than the subscription is worth. But they need numbers of readers to set their advertising rates, and this is one way to get them.
I understand all the words, they just don’t make sense together like that.
I always thought Publishers Clearing House was more into new subscriptions than renewals, but you’re probably right. As to Roseanne, that must have been after I thought it had gone downhill and stopped watching it.
