… the MOAB bomb (I suspect) that destroyed Saddam’s palace on the Tigris? Looked just like a small nuclear explosion, with the mushroom cloud and all. I’ve heard people talking about doing this very thing for a long time now; I’m in awe that I actually see it happening.
Wanna see it from above? Space Imaging has this LARGE image on their site. The palace is on the bottom of the photo, on the upper edge of the river bank.
I seriously doubt anyone in his right mind would use a MOAB in downtown Baghdad. Precision weapons are what you’d want in such an environment. So, while it may look big, my guess is what you’re seeing is a 2,000 lb precision-guided warhead.
I see by the coverage that you’re right, it was bombed by Tomahawks- my mistake was all the publicity about the mushroom cloud.
What is the structure on the top right in SmackFu’s link? It looks like Farpoint Station.
It’s actually the Unknown Soldier Monument, which looks even freakier in the photos from ground level.
That is a gorgeous monument, I certainly hope it survives, both for its beauty and its meaning.
I agree. That is a very beautiful monument. It would be a shame to blow it up.
