SPECIAL EFFECTS

DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW THEY DO THE SPECIAL
EFFECT THAT I GUESS GOT ITS CLAIM TO FAME ON
THE MATRIX; WHERE THE GUY JUMPS AND HALTS IN
MID AIR AS THE CAMERA SEEMINGLY DOES A
COMPLETE 360 AROUND HIM? I’VE NOTICED THIS
SAME TECHNOLOGY ON SOME COMERCIALS AS WELL,
LIKE THE FRIDAYS COMERCIAL FOR EXAMPLE.

First of all, you need to take the caps lock OFF, AND I AM NOT KIDDING. To answer your question, what they do is set up camaras in a circle around the “jumping guy” (I never saw the movie) and take a snapshot at exactly the same time with all the camaras. Now, if they had left it at that, you would see the other camaras across the circle in the frame. To stop those camaras from showing up in the frame, they simply airbrush them out. What you are left with is frames of the guy that look as if he has stopped in midair while the camara kept moving.

Your are correct lardball, sort of!

What you said with the camera’s all surrounding him, and airbursh them out of the fram is right, sort of. The cameras are actually in sort of a wave pattern, so only a few cameras have to be edited out. Also, the cameras are taken in concession, one after another from the beggining to the end, and then they just play them all in order, kind of like the first slide show…

kind of ironic how the simplest principle of film making has been utilized to produce the most “visually stimulating” movie of this century…

http://www.virtualcamera.com should explain it all.

It should be noted though, that the effects used in the gap swing ads were all computer generated, and didn’t use one of these virtual camera systems.

It should also be noted that some of the earliest motion photography, done by Edward Muybridge, used a very similar technique to that used in The Matrix (he had an array of still cameras, but they were triggered sequentially, not simultaneously)

So there you go, The Matrix uses 120 year old effects.

Get the DVD. The extra features included show how the effects were done.

But they can’t help with your inability to unlock your Caps

There are far too many Baldwins. The only Baldwin I care for is a piano …
