Specialist Dental Surgery for $26

That’s how much I paid for dental surgery on Friday morning in Bangkok. I had another thread asking if my tooth was dissolving, because that seemed to be the case. Turns out it was a large cavity that formed in the middle of my tooth below the gum line. This was in a tooth already covered by a permanent bridge. My dentist said this was the first time he’d ever heard of or seen a cavity below the gumline in a tooth that had not had a root canal. The dental surgeon agreed.

Since the tooth is below a permanent bridge, I was sent to a specialist. He had to cut open my gum and fill the cavity that way. Not too complicated, but the thought of slicing open my gum sent chills down my spine. But he was very skilled (had studied in Germany, I heard). Cut open the gum, fill the cavity, sew up the gum; the entire procedure took about 45 minutes. I’ll see my regular dentist in a week or two to have the stitches removed.

Grand total: 910 baht, which, at the current exchange rate of 35 baht to the US$, equals US$26. How much would something like this cost in the West nowadays?
