So I’m planning early on some Christmas presents. My sister & BIL love classical music and though I own a ton of classical CDs (more than they, even), I don’t know much about DVDs that feature classical music (as in performances, concerts, series, etc.). Opera’s good, too, though no movies. Any recommendations?
Also, my nephews (3 & 6) are going to be home schooled soon. We would like to get them some kind of DVD series that will help teach them Spanish. Any ideas?
I don’t have a lot of classical performances on DVD, most of my live music DVDs are jazz. Of those that I do have, these are my favourites:[ul][li]Ingmar Bergman’s The Magic Flute[]Glenn Gould’s The Goldberg Variations - Glenn Gould Plays Bach (1981)[]Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts (I wanted to recommend his Ode to Freedom performance of Beethoven’s 9th in 1989 but I was bummed to find out that it still hasn’t been transferred from the original VHS).[/ul][/li]I know you said no movies, but I consider these two indispensible:[ul][]Milos Foreman’s Amadeus[]32 Short Films about Glenn Gould[/ul]
Thanks for the recs, Hodge. I’m well aware of the Bergman and 32SFaGG, but I suspect those might be a little too “arty” for them. They enjoy concerts so I wanted something along those lines, but was pretty unfamiliar with what’s out there.
The Bernstein sounds great, though, since my nephews are starting to get involved in music, too, so it’s something they can enjoy as a family that isn’t Disney-related.
