Speedo question

I am helping a friend build a kitcar and we were thinking of using a speedometer from a different car to the donor.

I have taken apart the donor car’s speedometer and odometer and worked out that the total reduction is 1600 turns of the cable to 1 mile on the odometer. The car is French, and working on 1.6 km to the mile, the native kilometres only unit would be geared 1000 to one. A nice round number.

I seem to remember reading that all smiths (British) speedos worked on 1000 turns to the mile.

Is this ratio of 1600:1 standard for all European speedos?

If so, swopping should be easy. If not I could take the innards out of the old speedo and fit it into another one. I know that the needle moves 36 degrees per 10mph and I could print a different scale, but if there’s an easier way…

NOOO DON’T!..oops, nevermind, I thought you were talking about something else.

Yeah, I thought this thread was gonna be about “marble bags”, too!!

To the OP, if you are building a kitcar, I’m sure the engine, tranny and frame all come from the same cannibal? Why not use that Speedo/odo set? If not (assuming you can’t because it won’t fit), go to a speed shop or some such and find one with matching specs in the size/shape you wish.
