Ok, happy to oblige. “stupid/ignorant/ect.” - ect. should be etc. as it stands for “et cetera”. And by the way, I don’t think you’re stupid. Typically I don’t jump on every spelling mistake, even though they drive me crazy, and I think it rude that others do. Some people just don’t have the self-control that I possess. <buffs nails on chest>
No, seriously, I don’t think it should be criticized unless the person is totally obnoxious already and you need more reasons to put them down.
People in other countries don’t know english all that much, we must give them some slack or we won’t be able to read about other countries.
As long as the message gets through.
Peep…piping up here.
We look at your message (and the little letters) and judge you. That’s the truth. I should qualify that and say…I judge you.
If you don’t spell readable properly, I assume you’re not all that edgimacated…right or wrong, that’s what I think.
I’m not saying you have to be perfect…god knows I’m not. One of my 1st threads was bashed by the big brained types here. I took my licks…and now I’m more careful…still not perfect…but more careful.
We’re in a visual medium here. Looks do count.
Don’t be afraid to post…just be careful.
New Dopers…good…fire bad.
I for one, am glad your hear.
Jebus…I’m funny.
How were you taught to write? I think that’s the relevant issue here.
If you were taught to read very fast, I’m sure you will find that you can read something faster if it’s spelled and punctuated correctly. I remember reading the results of a study when I was in school (long time ago) that showed that reading speed was increased when the spelling and punctuation was correct.

[li]Computer spell checkers do not check for grammar, so they will allow many misspellings (i.e. “there”, “their”, “they’re” would all be ignored by a spell checker even if they are incorrectly used in the sentence.)[/li][li]Your sentence reminds me of the child that told me once “I don’t need to know how to add because I have a calculator.” I think you will find that good spelling skills will come in useful (e.g. in your professional life) regardless of the fact that your computer has a spell checker.[/li][/ul]
Yes, I agree that one should be more indulgent for people when english is not a native language. However those people should be aware that others may not want to take the trouble to decipher their posts if it is difficult to understand. In one international forum that I visited (an IRL forum, not a message board) every participant spoke their native language and the other participants did their best to understand. In the USA of course this is not a feasible solution since the vast majority of the population only speaks one language.
My spelling is poor but I haven’t been slammed because of it. Ignored perhaps. I hang out in GD mostly and attacking the style of an argument is a fallacy.
I must admit that I am shocked at the large number of longtime and otherwise respectable posters whom ( it is whom, right? ) use the misspelling “manny” when they mean “many”.
No. It is “who” when it refers to the subject of the sentence, which, in this case, is the set of people doing the using. However,I have been known to send friends “vole” instead of “love” if that’s any use.
Haha! I now find that I also neglect the space bar. Oops.
