Has the term “can not” always been an acceptable substitute for “cannot?” Semantically, “can not” should mean “could possibly not,” as opposed to “could not possibly.” For example, “I can not tell a lie” should mean “It is within my power to refrain from telling lies – but it is not my only option.” Right?
I think they made “can not” acceptable because that’s what they wrote on the Lincoln Memorial as part of their engraving of the Gettysburg Address. It’s all a government conspiracy.
