Spelling question

Is the word “riot” ever spelled with an “e” at the end, in some English-speaking countries?

…it’s being spelled by Dan Quayl.

(sorry, I couldn’t resist)

Just not correctly.

Ye olde riote in Ye Olde Shoppe.

Yes. By people who can’t spell.

But seriously… it’s hard to give a cast-iron assurance about all English-speaking countries, but I think it’s always ‘riot’ and never ‘riote’.

Then again, this link http://ice.ucdavis.edu/cehr/biblio.htm leads to a big list of scientific articles, including:

“2. Jacquioud, S., S.L. Ustin, J. Verdebout, G. Schmuck, G. Andreoli and B. Hosgood. “Estimating Leaf Biochemistry Using the PROSPECT Leaf Optical Properties Model.” Riote Sensing of Environment.”

Note this article was part-authored by a guy called Schmuck!

Meanwhile over at the ‘Exploding Dictionary’ ( http://projects.ghostwheel.com/dictionary?define=riot )
you will see some references to riote as an archaic English spelling for riot.

Basically, stuff ‘riote’ into Google and see what you get!

Now that we’ve all made our smart-ass comments, riot was once upon a time spelled riote. Per the OED:

And several other references. It’s also been spelled:

[ul][li]ryot[/li][li]riott[/li][li]ryette[/li][li]ryote[/ul][/li]It comes from Old French riote, riotte, and that seems to be the earliest English spelling, ryot became common before riot won out.

Seems to me that I’ve read that “correct” dictionary spelling is a relatively new phenomenon. Shakespeare apparently spelled words differently all the time, though this may because he didn’t actually write everything he wrote, some claim.

I think I spel pretty good, to.

:stuck_out_tongue:

It sure is! ‘riote’ however, in this case the person forgot the R. e.g rioter

Standardized English spelling is a relatively recent development. Had the OP used the past tense to introduce his question, or mentioned the availability of a time machine, I would have given a different answer.

I wonder if it as ever been spelled gryot.
