TISWAS (This Is Saturday Watch And Smile) was a Saturday morning kids show with music videos, cartoons and some adult presenters having anarchic fun and games. After it became noted adults were watching as intently as the target audience they did a spin off.
O.T.T. (Over The Top) was the short lived evening version with similar anarchic humour but directly aimed at adults.

Nobody’s mentioned “Better Call Saul,” a spin-off or “prequel” to "Breaking Bad.’
Breaking Bad was an hour long drama, while Better Call Saul leans more toward comedy.
Sealab 2021 is basically the Airplane! of cartoons. Take an existing property and add jokes.
True, believe it went to lawsuit and was determined that it was a version of the character from the book or movie, not the show.
This was mainly to avoid having to pay the people who created the show any money.

The original Dark Shadows wasn’t intentionally funny, the Johnny Depp movie was supposed to be funny.
