spinning speed governor?

What is the name of the family of speed regulators ( I think that’s what they are) that consist of any number of spheres (mass) that are located in the middle of pairs of spring loaded arms. When the speed increases, centrifugal forces make the balls spin out thereby pulling /compressing the springs.(somebody help me out here…)
If you know what I’m talking about you know that they are often found on antique devices. They have a simple beauty to them that can’t be beat.

Sounds like you are talking about flyweights.

I agree, they are neat.

I did a google image search on “flyweights” and came pretty darn close!
Thanks Joey G! That is certainly the family of devices.
The ones I had in mind were two balls on a shaft, though. Anybody got a link for a photo?

It’s also called a flyball governor. Invented by James Watt.

Thanks scr4! Thats it!

Now let us reflect on James Watts’ lovely invention for a moment…
