Back between 1969 and 74 my Dad worked for the family company until it was sold and it was not unusual to host people, or even have them stay in the house [very small town, no real hotel or motel at that time.] Being senior management [heh] with a very large house with 4 guest rooms rather played into this. We had a separate meal time in the kitchen [servants dining room area] and then went up to play and bed so we never really saw anybody unless they spent the night. When my Dad went to work for the other company, it was in a larger town, with several excellent places to eat [one formal restaurant, and one bar with a good restaurant of a more casual nature] and a small hotel. Though one blizzard in 1978 we did end up with several secretaries staying with us as everybody got snowed in for a few days. Much smaller house, so my brother and I crashed in the rec room in the basement and gave up our bedrooms to the guests.
Back in the early 50s, it wasn’t unusual to have a kid’s teacher over for dinner.
Bumping this thread: A while back, “Family Circus” did have a series of cartoons where Daddy’s boss was going to come over for dinner. Apparently he forgot to tell Thel and the kids that his boss was a woman LOL.
Dolly also piped up, “Don’t hang up your coat in that closet, because that’s where we stuffed all our toys.”
