spit, contempt and illnesses

Why do we spit as a sign of contempt? and why was it dangerous to spit on the ground, for instance, in the Sars time? If i do not touch the saliva, how can i get this ilness ?spit, contempt and illness

And spitting inevitably causes some of the saliva to be in the air, where small parts can float around and come into contact with someone else. Or they can land on a doorknob or something else that someone will touch.
