You forgot the c-section. Ayla also created the c-section…making a c-section a misnomer now that I think about it. She used a self-crafted 10 gauge needle and faux catgut. (She would have used real catgut but she turned vegan midway through the 5th book.)

I read the first five chapters and then abandoned Shelters of Stone simply because I came to the late realization that I really didn’t care about the characters anymore.

The sequels are more than a bit annoying for another reason as well. Auel insists on summing up “the story so far” in each succeeding novel so that readers who want to start in the middle don’t feel like they’ve missed anything. I quit reading with volume four since I felt insulted that she had to spend about 1/3 of the book telling me what I already knew. I think this is one of the reasons each book gets more bloated as it goes. With each novel there is more “story so far” to sum up.
