Save often. ;p If you have a save before the encounter then, if you really want him, go back to that one. It really doesn’t effect the game that much to have him or not, IMHO. Generally I found him more of trouble than he was worth, but you can always just tell him to wait for you at home and he will do that.
(ETA: Makes me want to reload the game and do some raider killin’. Maybe when I finish playing through the DLC’s for Dragon Age and if the new Empire expansion isn’t out yet I’ll fire it back up and roam about some more. I really miss cappin’ me some raider chicks out in the wasteland…)
Yeah, if you shot him dead, than… well… he’s dogmeat.
You’ll need the aforementioned high level perk to get him back short of reloading, but I have to agree with xtisme, frankly he’s not that useful. Some of the companions are I think, (the brotherhood paladin is very good, as is Fawkes), but Dogmeat tends to die easily anyway.
I had Fawks until I did the Point Lookout DLC and then he wandered off somewhere and I never bothered to get him back. I think he went to the Ghoul underground, but at that point I really didn’t need him, even with the Mutant mod that upped their spawn rate and density.
You’re probably not high enough in level yet. Though I’m level 14 right now, and there aren’t a ton. There’s a lot more on the Mall. I’m seeing a lot more Enclave these days.
I need to go retrieve Dogmeat - he’s at Vault 101 right now. I think I just want to park him at home. Can I still activate him now that I have Paladin Cross?
I met Gary last night. Fun times* were had by all.
And by “fun times” I of course mean “headshots”. And by “all” I mean “Gary”.
The Mall was fun. Man, I started going the wrong way and headed towards the Capitol Building when I was looking for the Museum of Technology, so I had extra mutants to kill.
Oh, one thing no one has mentioned - bobbleheads. If you’re looking to powerlevel, then getting as many bobbleheads as you can as soon as you can is going to really help. The earliest one to get (apart from the one in Vault 101) is the Intelligence one down in Rivet City, since Intelligence increases the number of skills you get every time you level up. There are guides on gamefaqs.com that will lead you through them.
Another good one to find early is the Strength one in Lucas Simm’s house. More strength means you can carry more loot, which means you can buy more stuff.
Have you disabled/blown up Megaton yet? If not, you can get a whole lot of loot if you agree to blow it up, but instead kill Tenpenny (make sure to headshot him) and everyone else there, then go back and disable it.
You know, I was wondering how that worked. I had already read a bunch of books, then I see that perk becoming available, and I was sad that I didn’t know about if beforehand. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have read a thing.
Hm… I could just restart. I’ll play it like Dragon Age with 6 savefiles and never beating the game on any of them.
What’s your starting INT? Between a starting INT of 7+, the books, the bobbleheads and other perks that increase skills as side benefits, you don’t even need the book perk.
There are lots of guides, but I agree that getting the bobble heads is important (and fun too). The ones I remember are:
Megaton: Strength
Rivet City: Intelligence
Raven Rock: (I think) Energy Weapons BH
Fort Constantine: Big Guns
Death Claw Sanctuary: Endurance
Republic of Dave: Perception
Arafu: (don’t remember which one, it’s in the old guys house)
National Guard Depot: Small Guns (also, the MIRV is in there too…keep it for your collection, don’t try and use it in combat :p)
Yao Guai Sanctuary: Sneak
Evergreen Mills: Barter
Dunwich Building: Melee Weapons (don’t do this one until after you do Point Lookout)
Rockopolis: (don’t remember which one, it’s by the radio guys body though)
There are a few more that I don’t remember where I got them. At one point in the game I just decided I wanted all the Bobble Heads and to explore every site on the map (including going back and exploring all the sites on the DLC maps), so I spent a few days just going and getting them all. The vault mod I have has a really cool bobble head display system that is right next to my weapons and armor display, so it was cool when I finally got them all. Even without the mod, it will be nice whey you have the display at your house in Megaton fully populated…and it really beefs up your character too.
I saw something about the third floor of the National Guard building. I got there accidentally, tried to get up in the area, but couldn’t make it. I figure I’ll try again when it becomes part of the main quest or what not.
