Spoiled Music

One of the scariest films I know (The Excorcist) featured a piece from Mike Oldfields “Tubular Bells”. It was a perfect piece of music for the film. It buiild the tension just right, and added to the overall creepyness of the movie (for me at least)

And then they came along. A Dutch clown and acrobat combo that did a couple of kids-series involving adventures with bankrobbers, spies and a lot chases. Great fun for kids. And then they started using “Tubular Bells” in some of the “scary” scenes.

And now every time I see “The Excorcist” of hear “Tubular Bells” I think of a fat clown and a very camply dressing acrobat.

So, who spoiled what music for you?

Ever since the beef promoters started using Aaron Copland’s “Howdown” in their commercials I can’t help but think of the “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner” slogan every time I hear this music.

As in, “Howdown, Brown Cow?”

Not the same kind of issue, but I’ve seen and heard the chilling sound effects from the shower scene of Psycho parodied so much (Wayne’s World comes to mind) that they come across as silly when I see them now, although they are really quite powerful.
