That wasn’t all she was rebelling against. There was that line where he attributes her (regrettably) spirited nature to the things he “lets” her read. (I’m paraphrasing, but the attitude that intellectual freedom should not be allowed to women comes right through.) I thought he loved her, in his way, and I would have felt sorry for him, but that one line turned him into a villain for me. In my opinion, there’s not enough spoiling in the world to make it worth “humoring” that kind of attitude.
