Could the earthquake machine in The Core really work in real life? I know the movie had quite a bit of junk science. But would it be possible, given sufficient energy, to generate earthquakes in such a fasion?
Haven’t seen the movie. What mechanism was involved? As far back as the 1930’s, there was fiction about creating earthquakes using a piezoelectric effect in subterranean quartz strata.
My memory is kind of fuzzy, but I vaguely recall it involving directing magnetic particles through fault lines. The machine was located in Alaska and looked like a gigantic spark plug hovering above a large cylinder of wound wire.
