(Spoilers) Firefly Film Festival #14 "Objects in Space"

Thanks, Ithaka!

No, this is where he stirs in his sleep, grabs a blanket off the wall above his bed, revealing an enormous arsenal of firearms at the ready, rolls over, covering himself with the blanket, and returns to sleep.

Isn’t the charactor name “Jubal Early” a nod to Larry Niven’s writing?

Jubal Early was a Confederate Officer in the American Civil War.

Who was one of Nathan Fillion’s ancestors!

He’s Canadian.

Well, some of his ancestors weren’t. Like Jubal Early, for instance.

How does that preclude his being a descendant of Jubal Early?

I just can’t see a Confederte soldier’s family fleeing their defeated land by going North. You’d think it would be Mexico or the American West.

From here: *When the army was surrendered he rode horseback to Texas, hoping to find a Confederate force still holding out, thence proceeded to Mexico, and from there sailed to Canada. *

Says he came back, though. I wonder if it was too cold, or if he just waited out Reconstruction.

Anyway, it was a poor attempt at humor.

Interesting that the character he plays was on the losing side.

Well, he was obviously there long enough!

I guess I was thinking that someone in the at least eight generations between Jubal Early and Nathan Fillion (assuming he’s a direct descendant) might have gotten over the defeat and moved along.

I live in Edmonton his home own. Witch has actually made getting a copy of the Firefly comic really hard.

“Oh you would like a copy of the firefly comic, well Mr. Fillions brother bought ever copy he had, but we will let you know when we have more in.”

I get that same bit here in Saint Louis.

Should I mention the Serenity Issue #2 is out, with Kaylee, Book and Zoe covers? Or does everybody already know that?

Are you saying it’s one comic, but with different versions of the covers? I hate that. It’s so 90’s, and so uncollectable.

It’s a three volume comic, and each volume has 3 variant covers, each by a different artist and featuring a different character. They are only $2.99, so it’s not like they are really trying to squeeze the last nickel out of the consumer.

Jubal just seemed to be in the vein of villians who stand around and talk too damn much. His talking, when it served a purpose (threatening Kaylee), was fine, but his speeches just bugged.

As for the whole, “River is part of the ship” thing, I never thought that she actually became part of the ship (her mysterious mental powers aside, how could that happen?), so I wasn’t surprised that she was in fact not. I thought she had done something like “Bushwacked” and was hanging out outside the ship.

I did like the funny bit with Jayne. I had to watch the opening hallucinations a couple times before I realized what was going on. Where did she get the gun, and why do you think she visualized it as a tree branch (though I did notice the branch was vaguely gun-shaped)?

OK. I guess I see Jubal as someone who has to talk because otherwise we wouldn’t get the peculiar way he views the world and wouldn’t see the varying approaches he uses in interacting with different members of the crew. But I’m sure it’s also a matter of taste. As for “River is the ship” idea; I didn’t believe it either (well, I teetered on the edge for a second), but I thought it was interesting to watch River in control of the action and building doubt in Early about the concept.

A question for everyone:
So what do you think it means when Book tells Jayne “I’m more or less intact.” during their chastity conversation? This one’s been bugging me for a while.

More favorite lines:
Mal, to Inara: “So unless you’ve got the overwhelming urge to gut sturgeon, and who hasn’t occasionally?..”

And this combination of goofiness and caring:
Wash:“Good ol’ River just gets more colorful by the moment. What’ll she do next?”
Zoe: “Either blow us all up or rub soup in our hair. It’s a toss-up.”
Wash: “I hope she does the soup thing. It’s always a hoot and we don’t all die from it.”
Zoe: “That poor kid.”
Wash: “Yeah…she’s definitely got…”
