NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Great effort and wonderful spirit. Bad luck !
Wow.
Nothing to be ashamed of there. What a run, USA!
And there are still plenty of underdogs left to root for.
A great game, a disapointing loss. Still, the future looks bright for the U.S. team.
Congrats Germany. You were GREAT Americans!
Ah well. US played well, bad luck boys.
Right, us Englanders are out, you Murricans are out… who shall we throw our lot in with?
I’m going with Turkey.
Ah, bollocks.
Thank you, Americans - a great addition to the tournament, and a team to look out for in the future. There’s no shame in losing to Germany, especially not in the quarter finals. Still, I’d love to have seen more of the team. See you in 2006, in… Germany.
Damn, we’ll get 'em next time.
no more football [soccer] for me, thanks. trying to type with half eaten fingers
hey, my post count is over 500. Yay me.
If nothing else, the USA proved we deserved to be there. That was a well-played game. The American team has skills, man!
Now I’m going to root for Germany. If we lost to the eventual champion, it won’t look so bad.
Well, since my wife’s Korean, I still have someone to root for. Damn, I was really hoping to see the U.S. get to the next round. Wouldn’t that be something, me & the wife watching U.S. vs Korea in the Semi’s.
The worst part of this is the fact that it’ll be 4 more years before we get a chance to fight it out again. Well, that and the fact that the original poster’s handle keeps making me hungry for a cheese omelet.
With us and England both out in the span of one morning, that leaves the field pretty short on interest. I think I’ll just root for whoever is playing against Germany, those Germans need to be taken down a peg or two, Treaty of Versailles style!
Well, I better get at least a couple more hours of sleep, I’m out.
So the Germans strengthened their defense in the second half? Trying to defend their single goal in a series where one-point leads aren’t very safe?
Don’t look behind you. We’re catching up.
Well played. Nobody will underestimate the US team now.
I hope this proves to you Americans that even low-scoring games can be exciting, especially when you’re rooting for one side.
Now I’m rooting for the Spaniards myself. I don’t want Germany getting into the final. I don’t think Korea will win the semi if they get there… Underdogs don’t usually go beyond the semis. And I like Spain too. Nice country.
Well at least now we have a good story about about how close we were once. The way I see it you can never be a true fan of a sport unless you are able to drunken ly bitch about some near miss.
Well, since my wife is Brazilian, I think I am going to have to whole-heartedly root for the ‘Grand canaries’ now.
Brasil, pentacampeão !!!
Well, they did look awfully good beating Ingerland today, and they should be able to beat either Senegal or Turkey even without Ronaldinho (By the way, there is a hilarious article on Ronaldinho’s performance ‘outside the pitch’ on the SUN’s website.)
O drible, o improviso
O grito da galera
O gênio de Mané Garrincha e de Pelé
A gente quer ser
pentacampeão
No país do carnaval
O pessoal acredita
E grita pra desabafar
E no país do futebol
O sol nasceu mais bonito
Pra ver nosso time jogar
E o nosso time é assim
Não tem tempo ruim
Chova ou faça sol
Aos olhos de quem viu
Vitória do Brasil
Ganhou o futebol
Wow, well we sure had our chances! The boys can be proud (why do you always end up saying that and feeling like anything but?).
Too bad that ball didn’t get over the line. Just for clarification, it wasn’t handling, because you have to intentionally handle the ball for a foul to be called, and clearly the ball was deflected into the player’s arm. Had the player moved his arm to try and block the ball, THEN a penalty kick.
London_C, you should read the size differences in the lineup, which they listed in USA Today the other day. I think Neuville was the only German on the field at less than 5’ 11", and most of them are 6’ 1" or better. For the Americans, except for the back line of Sanneh, Pope and Berhalter, the only two players over 6’ are McBride and Friedel, and several are in the 5’ 7" category. Size mismatch from the word go.
We lost this game for two reasons: we didn’t get lucky on our finishes (indeed we got a little unlucky), and we got into a spell late in the first half where we were fouling the Germans in a very dangerous area, giving them too many opportunities to cross onto heads. The fact they only had two decent shots on goal all game says we did one HELL of a good job on defense.
Me, I’m rooting for Senegal, but from the likely finalists, I’d like to see Brazil v Spain rather than Brazil v Germany.
Nice job boys. Well done. As someone said above, nothing to be ashamed of here.
My entire knowledge about Spain:
- The guy who wrote Don Quixote is from there.
- England sank a crapload of their wooden ships 400 years ago, probably under the leadership of some guy named Admiral so-and-so
- They close shops to take 2 hour naps in the afternoon.
#3 is enough reason on its own to like the country, I suppose. Of course, if they had SDMB in Spanish they’d keep being tempted away from the naps to respond to some rant or another, and the whole nap time would be wasted. Perhaps they nap because there’s nothing else to do. Either way, sounds like a good country to me.
You know that average-looking girl that always hangs around the ugly girls to look better in comparison? Well, you can’t beat bordering France as far as that goes. Go Spain??
