Has anyone heard of this? I am now 33. Since I was in my mid 20’s I have had a bald spot growing on the crown of my head. Just the other day my wife gave me a haircut and declared that my bald spot was gone. I ran to check in the mirror and sure enough, the formerly hairless area was completely covered!
Why on earth would something like this happen? I know my wife hasn’t been slipping me Rogaine because I do most of the cooking and I certainly would notice such an expense.
Being a science teacher, I know things don’t just happen. They must be caused to happen. The only medications I take are two blood pressure medications (hydrochlorothiazide and monopril), neither of which lists hair growth as a side effect. I have been taking both for over a year and my wife cuts my hair every four weeks. If they caused hair growth I think she would have noticed it before now.
I’m thrilled but stumped. Any clues?
Have you taken up wearing a hat?
PS: Rogaine is applied topically, not orally. Who wants hairy gums?
Hmm. While minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine, is a high blood pressure medicine, the mechanism in both the blood pressure and hair loss indications appears to be different from anything that your medications do.
Have you changed your habits? Part your hair differently, quit wearing hats? The only good lead I can think of is a sudden reduction in testosterone production, in which case you’d better see your doctor.
Duh, I forgot about Rogaine being topical, hehe.
The only habits I’ve changed other than the blood pressure medications is the fact that I’ve been working out regularly for the past year.
The result has been an increase in, um, appetite, if you know what I mean. I don’t think there has been a reduction in testosterone.
So I guess I’m getting more buff, less bald, and hornier every day. Watch out ladies!
I still don’t understand the hair growth, though.
Did you change blood pressure meds? Were you previously on a beta-blocker like inderal or a blood thinner like warfarin or heparin?
Testosterone doesn’t necessarily cause hair loss, it can actually help stop it if it somehow ends up reducing the production of the enzyme that converts it to DHT which causes hair loss. It’s a tricky balance. If your a lot healthier in general perhaps your body is producing less 5-alpha reductase.
I am a lot healthier, according to my blood tests and the way I feel.
Maybe that’s the secret, just get off your fat ass and work out a little. I dunno, there’s still a lot of buff bald guys.
Gonno go google the 5-alpha reductase thing…
Rogaine is topical, but hair growth was noticed in patients taking an oral version of it originally intended to control blood pressure. That’s how the drug minoxidil came to be known as a potential regrower of hair. Since it works topically, it is the safer approach, since not everyone would need if for BP control.
Regrowth of bald spot, esp is a male pattern bald spot, could be due to low testosterone…which could also manifest itself in a higher voice pitch and recuded beard growth, among others. There is a treatment, involving a steroid patch (testosterone clone drug)…just in case in comes to that. It does happen.
I think they left 15 years ago.
Do you have a change in health or nutrition? I had something like that happen too. My hair was thinning a little and starting to go grey until I got healthier and started taking vitamins daily. I am almost 45 now and people constantly ask me what I do to my hair to keep it so dark and thick (also what kind of dye I use). The answer is nothing. I don’t know the exact cause but, whatever it is, is like Miracle Grow. I can also tan much, much darker than I used to be able to. I blame it on all the kale that I eat but I really don’t know the reason either.
Hair loss can be an issue related to the immune system, stress and also hormonal balance.
Given that it happened in a male pattern baldness location, the hormonal balance would be a leading issue to consider.
Getting fit, adding muscle, improving circulation: All can swing the hormone mix and affect the delivery of the hormones.
Women experience hair loss when their hormones fluctuate with some birth control, and when the hormone balance comes back, so will some hair.
So… hormones.
